Gunnar Hoak is still in the hunt for QB1 at Ohio State

Don’t shoot the messenger, but apparently, Gunnar Hoak is in contention for QB1 at Ohio State.

Justin Fields, the five-star Georgia transfer, was expected to walk into to Columbus and essentially be handed the starting job. But, according to first-year Buckeye head coach Ryan Day, that isn’t the case.

Dustin Schutte from Saturday Tradition writes:

“I thought after today I’d have a better feel. I didn’t,” Day said, according to Dan Hope of Eleven Warriors. “Nobody went out there and won the job, for sure.”

There’s still plenty of time for one guy to separate himself, but it sounds like there’s a real battle in Columbus.

Maybe that’s not completely surprising considering both players are learning a new system and have limited game experience. Still, Fields not being the clear starter at this point probably isn’t the kind of news most expected out of Ohio State.

It’ll be interesting to see how long Day goes before pulling the trigger on one of these guys.

Could it be coach-speak or is Gunnar Hoak really about to be the starting quarterback for Ohio State?

All I know is, I saw number 12 in blue last season, and either he has vastly improved this offseason or Justin Fields isn’t quite living up to expectations.

Not to bash Gunnar Hoak, but Terry Wilson is my quarterback and I still believe Kentucky got the right guy out of the deal. If Hoak does become QB1 for the Scarlet and Silver next season, there is no need to ‘what if?’. Kentucky has their guy.

psst…I’m still not prepared for our fanbase’s reaction if Gunnar Hoak is QB1 at Ohio State.

Of course he’s in the hunt, he’s a scrimmage monster but as soon as a game starts he falls off significantly.

Or our coach had a great QB under his nose and didn’t know it… hope thats not it…

He had snaps last year. Not impressive.

If he did it wasn’t Hoak.

Anyone who thinks the UK staff wouldn’t have played the best QB is insane and needs to stick to other conspiracy theories.

Well he wasn’t as fast as Wilson…so we didn’t need a throwing QB like the rest of the world does…thanks Benny and the defense for a 10 game season

If Terry doesn’t make throws we lose to Missouri

BigolSlaterMedic is back! Expect him to jump off and on the Terry bandwagon several times this season like he did last season.

Another possibility is Gunnar may understand and fit that system a little better, but my guess is he gets a little anxiety in front of large crowds. In our practices and scrimmages he looked much more poised than game time!

If he starts that just makes me feel sorry for Ohio State

It is coach talk, I live 30 minutes from OSU. They did say in their 1st full pad scrimmage there were two picks returned for touchdowns but failed to say who threw them. Maybe Fields is just that bad but Fields transferred there, and a couple other qb’s transferred out after he got there, because he was the #1 qb and he knew he would not be at UGA. OSU had 2 qb’s that are better than Hoak leave. Plus Hoak played High School ball a stones throw from Ohio Stadium and OSU showed no interest. Against the good High School teams he put up terrible numbers, not bad numbers I mean terrible numbers. If you watched him in the games last year for UK you can see he is better suited for a smaller conf school. His advantage is the Big {however many teams they have} is a weak conf but he is not even at that level.

Most coaches say that to keep everyone working hard. Can u imagine if he named Fields starter, Gunnar would have nothing to work for. I’ve seen this many when a starter early the backups feel left out. But. I do hope Gunnar finds himself there, nothing the best for him but I’m happy with Wilson

Absolutely no disrespect to Gunnar Hoak because I still wish he was here backing up Terry TD, but if Hoak is in contention for QB1 then that may say more about Justin Fields than anything else.

Doesn’t sound good for Buckeye fans. They both suck equally as bad.

QB needs to fit the system, too. A starting qb is one system isn’t necessarily a starting qb in another system.

We never really saw the real Gunnar because a QB has to get reps in game to get that confidence up. QB is a tough spot, confidence is key. I could easily see him being much better with more reps and better QB coaching.

    It’s a fit thing.

UK still needs a guy that can throw and run – not enough WR options yet to make defenses play honest. So Hoak didn’t work here … Wilson has a chance to work very well if he reads better and stops putting the ball on the ground – because that’s what loses Gran and Stoop’s confidence and shrinks the playbook.

Hoak is a true pocket guy, and although UK’s line is better, it’s still not right for a pure pocket guy given the lack of downfield options.

I was as loud as anybody to give Hoak a chance. He got more than one. Didn’t work out. Doesn’t mean Hoak is a bad QB. Just not the QB for Kentucky. Frankly – I wish Danny Clark stayed. I think he could have been.

Either way hoak didn’t fit our offense and the guys wanted terry. I liked Danny Clark better than hoak! Wish him well he was still a cat and may be a starter at Ohio state and we said no thanks, that speaks volumes to our program now.

And I’ll admit I thought Terry was lackluster. Facts are facts. Can he improve? For sure. And I sure as hell hope he does. I actually believe he will. I put real life money on it at least….so you know where I stand. At the same time….am I glad Sawyer Smith is here? Yes I am. Lol

You saw Hoak attempt 26 passes. How many consecutive series did he play, if any?
