Bol Bol considering UK again, but needs explanation for Team USA snub

After it seemed things had fallen completely off, the Bol Bol buzz is back on in Kentucky.

Bol is rumored to be considering the Cats all over again now that a black cloud hovers over USC and Arizona. The same goes for Shareef O’Neal, and there’s some talk that both could attend Big Blue Madness next week.

But for Bol, he and his family need an explanation as to why he was cut from Calipari’s U19 team earlier this summer, before they can move on.

His mother told SEC Country’s Kyle Tucker, “He’s kind of a little sad with Kentucky. The coach promise him – like really promise him – that he’s going to be picked to go to Egypt [for the FIBA World Cup]. And then it did not happen. He was really sad about that. I could see he was sad. [Calipari] never explained what happened.”

Kentucky was the presumed leader for Bol before he was sent home from the USA U19 training camp. Now it has an opportunity to get back in Bol’s good graces, but not until he understands why he didn’t make the trip to Egypt.

My understanding is Calipari could only take one naturalized citizen, and the committee chose Georgia Tech sophomore Josh Okogie over Bol. Whether or not that is the case, Cal should (and probably will) explain what happened and go all-in on Bol because there aren’t many big men available in the class.

Does anyone else think it’s really weird that all these kids who were “locked in” to certain colleges have now reopened their recruitment shortly after a FBI investigation was announced?

Would you want to go to a school that might be handed a postseason ban mid-season for your only year there?

Be shocked if they didn’t open up their recruitment, unless I lived under a rock

If what this kid says is correct, Calipari really dropped the ball by not talking to him about why he was not selected for the U19 team – particularly if he PROMISED him he would make the team.

Guess it’s possible Cal really didn’t like how he performed at the trials, in which case he should not want him at KY either.

    Very curious…

Since when does Cal promise anyone, anything? This has been embellished by someone, either the reporter or the mom. He does not make promises

    A) Cal never promises a kid anything.
    B) Cal has been upfront with everyone that while he wanted Bol on the team, it was the committee’s decision to take Okogie as the only naturalized citizen. There have even been posts about how he reached out to the kid/family after the decision to explain.

Wires get crossed sometimes, and I’m sure Cal will chat with them, but I agree that it sounds like either embellishment or miscommunication within the Bol family. Probably minor in the grand scheme of things, but it is a little weird.

If the only issue is the Team USA thing, then I just gained a lot of confidence that we get him. Cal can explain that away pretty easily IMO. I’m so excited at the possibility of getting this kid.

Cal’s recruitment this year is a mystery in regard to the big men. You have Bol who has always shown a big interest in Cal and UK and then you have Shittu who was practically begging for a UK offer with none ever forthcoming. Instead Cal offers Jaxson Hayes, who has never even started a game in high school. I will never question Cal or his motives but this is a real head scratcher.

Well, could be because so many people complain that they are “sick of the one and dones.” Perhaps Cal felt he had enough one and dones, and he should recruit some players that are likely to stick around for a few years. Also, maybe Hayes has a good GPA, which will help pull up the team average. I’m just making stuff up here, but I trust Cal has good reasons for what he is doing.

Shaq’s ex, the kids mom, wants him to stay on the west coast. Shaq said he will let his son make the final choice, but if he were a high school senior with legit NBA aspirations, Cal would be the guy to help him get there. As for Bol, playing time might be an issue if he should pick UK, unless of course he is indeed one of the top big guys on the team. BUT, he on the surface sounds like he already sees himself among the elite bigs. Couldn’t say, because haven’t seen him play.

Bol is ranked as the 3rd best overall recruit in 2018 behind RJ Barrett and Zion Williamson and Shittu is 8th.
