Bob Baffert has done it again, taking home his seventh Kentucky Derby victory as Medina Spirit (12-1) crossed the finish line first for the upset win.

Medina Spirit came in first, followed by Mandaloun in second, and Hot Rod Charlie in third. The morning-line favorite, Essential Quality (5/2), came in fourth.

“I cannot believe he won this race,” Baffert said after the race. “He came in here, trained well or it. I’m the luckiest guy in the world. … That little horse has got a heart. That little horse, he won it today. It hasn’t sunken in yet.”

Baffert’s seventh victory is a new Derby record, with jockey John Velazquez taking home his fourth win to become just the fourth jockey in history to do so.

Medina Spirit won or placed in four consecutive preparatory races leading up to the 147th running of the Derby.

Churchill Downs announced a combined attendance of 51,838, making it the biggest public sporting event in the United States since COVID-19 wiped out crowds in 2020.
