Bleacher Report Thinks Alex Poythress Won’t Start

Jason Franchuk at Bleacher Report wrote who he thinks the best sixth men will be for the 2015-16 season. Making the list was our very own Alex Poythress.

While it’s a nice a compliment for Poythress, I’ll have to disagree with Franchuk that he will be coming off the bench. As long as he doesn’t face any setbacks rehabbing his torn ACL, there’s no reason Poythress doesn’t start next year. He provides senior leadership as well as versatility very few across the country can match.

The bigger question is does Coach Cal want to start Poythress at the small forward or power forward position. While Poythress has played both positions and arguably is more effective at the power forward position – if the Cats want to go small – Calipari showed he’s not afraid to play him at the three, starting him alongside Willie Cauley-Stein and Karl-Anthony Towns last year while he was healthy.

What do you guys think? Do you think Poythress should start and if so at what position or does he come off the bench?

Your first mistake is reading bleacher report. Second is even mentioning them. Its a really really poor website. Anybody, ANYBODY can submit articles…..and they do

The kid is coming off an ACL surgery. I doubt Cal will start him so he can play with less pressure. ACL’s aren’t easy to bounce back and kids get hurt while recovering often. Let him come back at his time and he may eventually start but I doubt he’ll be playing full speed by the time preseason starts. Give him some time and hopefully he’s beasting mid season.

When Alex starts, it’s as if he’s suffering from anxiety and thinks too much. When Alex gets a few minutes to get a feel for the game from the bench, he’s been a beast. Cal has even said this. My vote goes towards a starting lineup of Ulis-Briscoe-Mulder-Skal-Lee with Poy first off the bench. A lineup I’d love to see is Ulis-Briscoe-Skal-Poy-Lee. Skal has an incredible face-up game for his size and would be a matchup nightmare at the 3 a la Lyles last year. Let Skal defend the 4 on D and play the 3 on O so that Poy can guard the 3 and play the 4 on O.

Alex will start at PF. Expect to see a lot of 3 guard offense next season.

I’d go with Ulis, Briscoe, Labissierre, Poythress &.Lee. The only thing that would change that would be a Jamaal Murray commitment.

From a projected first round pick out of high school to not starting as a senior. Lol.
