Badass Kentucky female fighter pilot running for Congress

Lt. Col. Amy McGrath was the first female Marine to fly an F-18 in a combat mission, and now, she’s running for Andy Barr’s seat in Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District. Her campaign ad will give you chills.

Contrary to what some of you may think, I couldn’t care less about politics, but someone sent me the video of McGrath’s ad announcing her run today and I was so impressed I had to share:

McGrath, an Edgewood, Kentucky native, grew up wanting to fly fighter jets but when she was 13, was informed by her congressman that she wouldn’t be able to because “women ought to be protected and not allowed to serve in combat.” She pursued her dream anyways and while she was at the Naval Academy, the law changed. From there, she started a 20-year military career in which she flew 89 combat missions, including bombings targeting al Qaeda and the Taliban. She’s not the only trailblazer in her family; McGrath’s mother, a polio survivor, was one of the first women to graduate from UK Medical School.

Now, McGrath’s story is going viral. Today alone, it’s been featured on CNN, The Washington Post, NBC News, The Hill, Esquire, and practically every major news outlet you can think of. Argue about politics all you want, but the one thing we can all agree on today is that Lt. Col. Amy McGrath is a badass.

Wondering if this story makes this website if Ms. McGrath was a R ?

Of course it wouldn’t make this site if she wasn’t a she and had an R by her name!

Remember Ms. Tyler Thompson’s blog post about that “badass” female Jenean Hampton? Yeah, that Jeanean Hampton who is our current Lieutenant Governor and the FIRST African-American to hold ANY statewide office in Kentucky history? One of four children who grew up in poverty because her single mother lacked a high school diploma? The “badass” female who worked in the auto plants to save up money to put herself through college and graduate with a degree in industrial engineering? The “badass” female who after college enlisted in the Air Force, achieving the rank of Captain, and serving in Operation Desert Storm responsible for search and rescue missions and tracking enemy aircraft? The “baddass” female who after retiring from the military went back to graduate school and got an MBA? Her story didn’t blow up on all the media sites because she’s a “badass” female with an R beside her name.

Story would never appear on this website if she was an R. That is sad.

It would if Republicans would care a lick about the common people but news flash most don’t.

Anybody that supports McConnell needs to be voted out of office. The Turtle is a disgrace to this wonderful state.

News flash, neither party cares for the common people. Unless you don’t work, you hate this country, are questioning your gender, or are a druggie. Then everyone cares for you.

Yes, put him in a fighter jet cockpit. No copilot, no chute. Seems fair

It would be nice if people could just find it objectively badass that one of the first female fighter pilots is from here and she just so happened to defend our country from oh I don’t know, terrorists? Appreciating her can be done even if you don’t agree with her politics (which you probably haven’t looked at).

I agree with Tyler. Doesn’t matter about politics. She is a badass in life and probably would be one in congress as well. Andy is Kentucky Royalty. Definitely not a badass.

As a veteran, I salute the young lady for working tirelessly to accomplish what she did with the Marine Corps and look forward to her potentially winning a political seat. Regardless of political affiliation, it is my belief that more veterans, regardless of affiliation, need to be seated in Congress so that this country may have the opportunity to save itself from political elitists and needless military conflict.

I’m a republican and have never voted for a democrat but as a former Marine this lady has my vote. I don’t know if anyone knows how incredibly difficult it would have been for her to become the first female to fly a Marine FA-18 off a carrier. Semper Fi Ma’am

You are absolutely correct Brad. I’m a Republican who tends towards Libertarian/Independent and a former USAF Officer; what she accomplished is incredible. They don’t just give out those F-18 billets, they are EXTREMELY competitive. The fact that she accomplished her goal on top of the normal obstacles (competition, stress, technical proficiency, etc.) that wash good pilots out of this job is simply incredible! Go Cats!

She does have a compelling backstory, but she does not support my human right to health care without government interference. That is an stance against freedom and dignity.

She supports Obamacare, and Obamacare is inherently fascist if you are paying attention.
