With Austin MacGinnis on the practice squad ready to go, it looks like the L.A. Rams will instead go with Matt Gay, a second-year guy picked up off the Colts’ practice squad last week. MacGinnis and Gay are competing for the new opening at starting kicker, and though MacGinnis camped with the Rams and narrowly missed out on the job in September, early evening reports point to Gay getting the job.
Lindsey Thiry from the Rams beat tweeted, “The Rams have promoted DB J.R. Reed from the practice squad, the team announced. No announced move for K Austin MacGinnis, so looks like it’s Matt Gay who will handle kicking duties tonight against the Bucs.”
“The Rams promoted JR Reed to the active roster for tonight, but Austin MacGinnis has yet to be elevated. Might be Matt Gay time,” says Cameron DaSilva.
On Sunday a Rams writer for SI.com wrote MacGinnis should be the kicker and called him—“the guy who seemingly won the three-man kicking ‘competition’ during training camp. The Rams anointed rookie Samuel Sloman the ‘winner’, likely because they picked him in the seventh round out of Miami of Ohio.”
Everything we’ve read and heard has said MacGinnis has been L.A.’s best option from the beginning, but a third kicker will get an opportunity before him tonight on Monday Night Football.
This is infuriating. Just give him a try already. I hate the Rams so much.
