At Least it’s Not Duke

Hey BBN, here’s one thing to cheer about, Duke will not win the National Championship this season. Michigan State beat Duke this afternoon 68-67, to punch their ticket to the Final Four. Rejoice!

Now that Duke has lost this might be the oddest Final Four in recent memory. This year the Final Four will consist of Michigan State taking on Texas Tech and Virginia taking on Auburn.

No more Zion down our throats in college basketball, no more ‘best team ever’ talk, and no more Duke for a few months.

Kentucky is still up three national titles on Duke. Does anyone still want to burn a couch?

Don’t understand how this makes anyone feel better. You know we lost to them, BY 34. And if that was us you would be screaming “NCAA screwed us by making us play the #1 two seed when we should have played #4 two seed in Michigan. Same with them putting UVA vs Purdue in Loserville, a basic home game for Purdue. Bottom line is they lost to a great MSU team and we lost to a middle of the pack team that was without one of its top players, not even close in comparison.

      1. MSU lost to Indiana, TWICE. That’s not my benchmark for a “great” team.
      2. I believe UVA won that “home game” against Purdue.
      3. We lost to a team that killed Tennessee, Kansas, UNC, and beat us in OT. That’s not my benchmark for a “middle of the pack team.”

The tourney is all about who gets hot. We dealt with injuries that hindered us from getting back to our full strength, Auburn came into the tournament as one of the hottest teams in the country. I didn’t expect us to win because of those reasons.

    • Catsfan1715
      7:38 pm March 31, 2019 Permalink

Coach K has 1 title since he began recruiting 1 and dones. One. If you include 2010 and go back a decade where he was stacked with contributing juniors and seniors you could say 2. Ok so one more than Cal with all his juniors and seniors. He also has 2 fewer final fours, 2 fewer elite eights and 1 less sweet 16. My point is coaching freshman isn’t easy, and the argument that Cal does less with talent is ignorant BULLS**T!

Yes, the Duke loss just puts an exclamation point on how hard it is to build a championship team with primarily freshmen. I’ve questioned some of what Cal does but how do you coach mental toughness and maturity? We get awesome kids as does Duke, but talent alone just cannot overcome experience and the maturity required in stressful game situations. You can coach them, instruct them but when push comes to shove they perform just like a team of kids that have been together just seven or eight months. They are nervous 17 and 18 year olds.It is what it is and until the NBA rule changes it is the game. Hate the game love the players. Hate the game don’t blame the coaches when performance falls short.

Honestly who else is there that would put up with the circus that is the UK men’s basketball program? Cal is tailored made for UK. I just want to see him coach after the rule change. Then we’ll talk.

      8:28 pm March 31, 2019 Permalink

Balou, it’s the one and done rule’s fault? Hmm, pretty sure UVA, Auburn, Tex Tech and Mi State all play by the same rule. And Kansas State. And Wisconsin. Just because that’s the rule doesn’t mean we have to recruit ALL one and done wannabe’s every year.

    • Catsfan1715
      8:47 pm March 31, 2019 Permalink

So lets trade success then? Everyone you just mentioned-we’ve done better than all of them. But not this year ? Is that your argument? Wth is wrong with you people. You’d rather be like Texas tech or auburn. First time in decades they’ve made the final four ? You kidding me ?

    • BaLou
      9:23 pm March 31, 2019 Permalink

Matt…those teams you mentioned are trying to recruit those one and dones too but they aren’t getting them because of UK, Duke, Kansas….. It’s hard to argue against going after the most talented players available. The most athletic and the most naturally skilled. I too wish we had a better mix of upper classmen, but then if they aren’t as talented there’s no guarantee that we’d be consistently getting to the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight levels every year. Some would still be calling for Cal’s head. The rule change normalizes the playing field for everyone and I think will make the college games so much better. Then coaches can coach and be really held accountable for coaching x and o’s.

Hey…I’m old enough to have suffered through many years of mediocrity with no chance of sniffing an elite eight much less a final four. I’m frustrated with the loss today, but it was in the Elite Eight. We haven’t had the player dramas of old. Cal has good kids that are competing at a consistently high level and until the rule changes I’m happy having the one and dones come play for us. Where were all those teams you mentioned last year….or the year before that?

It’s like MJ says all the time. It’s 2 teams vs the field when it comes to one done. Just because they lose in the elite 8 which heck many teams haven’t even reached ever doesn’t mean it isn’t working. Look at TN. A senior laden team that didn’t make it past the sweet 16. Does that mean having seniors doesn’t work? What about UNC? What about Virginia last year? One and dones clearly work, the tournament is just REALLY REALLY HARD to win. The best team no matter if they have one and dones or 3 stars rarely wins.

    • Matt10
      8:32 pm March 31, 2019 Permalink

Cokely, it works until they get to crunch time in the big dance against veteran teams and then it doesn’t work. And that’s all that’s supposed to matter, except to Cal who considers that and the draft the success.

    • Cokely53
      10:08 pm March 31, 2019 Permalink

Crunch time? Give me a break. Did you not just watch the Houston game where we played a team with all seniors? Or duke the 2 previous games? Seriously people. You see one example and claim it as the rule. We’ve made the elite 8 7/10 years now. Who else has done that? The only teams even close are the ones with one and dones. Have you only be happy 8 times in your whole life? Winning a championship can’t be the only time you’re happy or you’ve got to be a miserable person. Sure it sucks when we lose and I want to win it every year more than anyone but out of like 300 teams in college we finished inside the top 8 but hey sorry that’s not good enough for you.

If you think MSU is an inferior team you just proved you know nothing. And I am one who has said all along FR, if that is all you rely on, can’t win a title. Show me where I ever said anything different. I am not surprised, in fact I posted last night, or maybe Friday night, that dUKe will end its season vs MSU. Izzo is a great coach and that play he had for the go ahead 3 pointer was brilliant. Knowing dUKe would focus on Winston he had Winston set the pick, both young dUKe players go with him leaving the 3 wide open. I said all along young teams and players will lose games in the tourney, today dUKe 17 turnovers to MSU 6. Zion and RJ had 12 total. If nothing else this loss proves what I have always been saying you idiot. And Coach K is way better than Cal, at least 34 points better has been proven, and his team was more inexperienced when we played.

      8:13 pm March 31, 2019 Permalink

“That play he had for the go ahead 3 pointer was brilliant.” If he had called it, I would agree. But Winston said after the game that the play broke down and it wasn’t even supposed to go to Goins. Lucky bounce.

Your last post just proves you know nothing about basketball. K has the easiest path each year but lots of embarrassing losses in the tournament. I guess he’s just a recruiter, not a coach.

    • StillBP
      7:45 pm March 31, 2019 Permalink

Newsflash TipTurd, Duke wasn’t 100% reliant on freshmen. Bolden and DeLaurier are both juniors who contributed this season. Did they contribute much? No. But stop saying Duke only relied on freshmen… bc you claim to only speak facts

    • Trueblue44
      8:02 pm March 31, 2019 Permalink

If Duke RELIED on Bolden or DeLaurier then it’s easy to see why they lost. They RELIED on freshmen, they took what they could get from the rest, that’s incredibly easy to see

    • StillBP
      8:07 pm March 31, 2019 Permalink

They RELIED on them to play over 30 games this season. Both were very highly touted recruits when they came to Duke. So why after 3 years with the best coach on earth are they not reliable? Hmmmmm

    • syrin23
      8:50 pm March 31, 2019 Permalink

The first game of the season means NOTHING, and you act like that single game proves some grand point of the scale of the cosmos which is doesn’t. It proves Duke could get hot for one game and look good for one game when they were one of the worst shooting teams in the country.

    • syrin23
      9:52 pm March 31, 2019 Permalink

And Duke had TWO juniors that were major contributors. This is one of Coach K’s greatest choke jobs, and after the money they spent to get Zion to come after the other commits. ACC WAY over rated. If the refs called the most obvious push off in tourney history against Virginia, there would be NO ACC teams in the FF despite getting three number one seeds.
