Analyst says UK target Cole Anthony is the best point guard recruit in last 15 years

Kentucky already has one of the top guard recruits in the class of 2019, and they’re in solid shape with another who just might be top point guard prospect over the last 15 years.

If you ask one recruiting analyst, at least.

The 2018 Nike EYBL Peach Jam Finale is in full swing, with some of the nation’s top prospects in America competing against one another in North Augusta, SC. College coaches and media members are out in full force, and the players are putting on a show for them.

While watching the event, Jerry Meyer, a recruiting guru for 247 Sports, said five-star 2019 recruit Cole Anthony was the best point guard he has scouted over the last 15 years.

Yes, even better than Derrick Rose, John Wall, and Kyrie Irving, among others.

When asked about his comments, Meyer said he understands just how incredible guys like Rose and Wall were in high school, but Anthony’s basketball IQ and polished style of play separates him as the best.

“His basketball IQ and his awareness on the court are just top of the line,” Meyer said. “I’m not saying Derrick Rose and John Wall, two of the best I’ve watched personally prior to now, didn’t have that. But he has a very good basketball IQ, he’s so polished and so well rounded and he can shoot the ball.

Meyer continued, saying Anthony is a knockdown shooter and just as athletic as Rose and Wall were in high school.

“That’s a huge separator — he’s a very dangerous long-range shooter,” Meyer said. “Generally speaking, he has a more complete skill set. He’s able to use either hand, make all kinds of shots and he’s just as athletic as those guys were.”

Luckily for the Cats, he’s a big fan of the Kentucky program and Wildcat commit Tyrese Maxey.

“I love Tyrese. I love Tyrese. I’m a huge fan of his game,” Anthony said. “He always has a huge smile on his face. Really just a good kid and a really good basketball player. (Playing with Maxey in college) would be awesome.”

And it’s not the first time he’s been outspoken about playing with Maxey in college.

“That’s my boy,” Anthony said in an interview with Ben Roberts of the Herald-Leader back in June. “Me and Tyrese, we talk a lot, obviously. He keeps pushing Kentucky on me. Obviously, we’re going to consider Kentucky. But there are no frontrunners in this. I don’t even have a list. Tyrese, love his game. I could obviously see myself playing with him.

“I think we would complement each other’s games. We both can shoot it. We’re both aggressive. We’re both very good defenders. So I could see it happening.”

There have been rumors that Duke is the favorite in his recruitment, but Anthony recently scoffed at the idea that he is favoring any school.

I don’t know how people are going to tell me where they think I’m going before I even have an idea where I’m going,” Anthony said. “That’s what I find hilarious.”

As far as a final decision goes, Anthony said he’s going to wait until the spring to make sure the coach he commits to is still there when he eventually suits up.

The plan is to do a late commitment,” Anthony said. “We just want to wait until the last minute possible, when we’re sure the same coaches are going to be there. You don’t want to commit [to a school], a coaching change happens, and you have to decommit. It doesn’t look good on your part.”

Until then, check out his most recent highlights from the Nike EYBL season:

If Calipari can get a backcourt of Anthony and Maxey in 2019, I’ll take Kentucky’s chances over everyone else in the country.

Come on down.

In order for Meyer to be right Anthony only has to be the number one overall pick in the NBA draft and the youngest MVP in NBA history.

Give me Anthony/Carey/Wismen/and one other person with Richards/Quickley/Baker/Green/and maybe Herro coming back and also commits Jeffries and Maxey, you talking a 2015 super team. Project starters for next yr: Anthony/Maxey/Jeffries/Wismen/Carey with Green/Quickley/Baker/Richards coming off the bench. All freshmen lineup like Michigan

I can’t see Greg Anthony wanting his kid to go to Duke after they ended UNLVs perfection bid. Why doesn’t someone ask him about that?

He still considers Westbrook, the biggest gun in NBA history a point guard??? Will never consider anything he says again.

Cole Anthony is very very good but I played against both Rose and Wall in AAU and Rose in high school here in Chicago, Anthony doesn’t come close to either of them. Cole is a better 3pt shooter because that’s where the game is going and he’s grown up developing those perimeter skills. Jerry is usually reliable but one he really struck out on.

Here we go again, another player who loves one of our commits and would love to play not the same team with him. How many times have we heard this only to watch them to to Texas or dUKe or some other school? I can name two real quick…Mo Bamba and Zion Williamson. Just sayin’.
