Shoutout to Abbey Cheek, who has been named a finalist for USA Softball National Player of the Year.
Kentucky’s senior third baseman is one of 26 finalists for the award, one of seven from the SEC. Cheek is currently hitting .462, which ranks sixth nationally. She’s also fifth nationally in slugging percentage (.957), fourth in walks (48), second in on-base percentage (.622) and 16th in home runs (16). The South Carolina native has already broken the school records for career home runs (57), runs batted in (193) and runs scored (164).
On April 15, Cheek was drafted No. 14 overall by the Chicago Bandits to play in the National Pro Fastpitch softball league. Teammate Katie Reed was also drafted by the Bandits with No. 19 pick.
You can see Cheek, Reed, and the Hittin’ Kittens in action vs. Eastern Kentucky tonight in the final home game of the regular season at John Cropp Stadium. First pitch is at 6 p.m., so hurry.
