This afternoon two athletes from the University of Kentucky diamond received postseason honors.
UK softball shortstop Katie Reed was named a NFCA Third Team All-American, becoming just the third All-American in school history. Just a sophomore, Reed had a .353 batting average, 26 runs, 71 hits, 10 doubles, three home runs and 21 RBIs on the season. She also had a 16-for-20 stolen base record. On defense she had the highest fielding percentage of any SEC shortstop at .961 and made SportsCenter’s Top 10 twice.
On the baseball field, Evan White was named a Semifinalist for USA Baseball’s Golden Spikes Award, given each year to the top amateur baseball player in the nation. The junior first baseman is hitting .366 with an impressive .629 slugging percentage. He’s scored 39 runs, driven in 38, hit eight home runs and stolen six bases. At the conclusion of the regular season, White was named Second-Team All-SEC and All-SEC Defensive Team.
White still has work to do this weekend. If he can help the Cats get five more wins, John Calipari will be soon be enjoying a stogie in Omaha.
