A look at Barry Rohrssen’s top 15 ranked 2016 guard

Conventional wisdom points to Pittsburgh assistant Barry Rohrssen being the replacement for Orlando Antigua on John Calipari’s Kentucky staff. Rumors have been circulating out of Pittsburgh for over a week now, and Kentucky took down the assistant coach job opening post on Friday. Rohrssen is known for his recruiting prowess, highlighted by the commitment of 2016 5-star/4-star (depending on the service) guard Mustapha Heron to Pittsburgh. One would have to think that if Rohrssen does in fact switch to Kentucky’s staff, Heron might consider making the move. Calipari has watched Heron play before. Heron is rated as the #15 player in the class of 2016.

Heron is a 6-4 guard out of Waterbury, Connecticut. Heron was recruited by UCONN, Florida, Kansas, Providence, Syracuse and Vanderbilt.

Check out some of his highlights below…

This isn’t a knock on the kid at all — if anything, it’s about the person who put that video together. But who makes a highlight reel of a point guard and doesn’t include a single damn pass?

Scout lists him as a SF and Rivals lists him as a SG. Being 6’4″ doesn’t make him a point guard; he’d be 6’6″ to 6’8″ easily by the time he hits college.

@Brian, why do you think he will be that tall? I was 6’3” as a Freshman in high school. I am now a Freshman in college and am 6’4”. Most boys stop growing by their junior years.

LOL I am completely convinced by such bombardment of anecdotal evidence.

Argh, I’m an idiot. For some reason I thought he was being listed as a PG. Makes much more sense for a SG.

Mr. Rohrssen, if and when you join Coach Cal’s staff bring Heron and recruit the talented players who are also good at the free throw line. Cats lost the Championship game because of poor attempts at the line.

This guy is the most over- rated recruiter since let’s say Billy Gillispie!! Pittsburgh actually had a better recruiting class the years that he was gone racking up that great record at Manhattan. This is a huge bust! I really don’t understand why we are going after a recruiter that can bring in a top 15 point guard, when we get a top 5 every year. Do the research on him and it is not that impressive.

Will he be a great recruiter at uk, who knows.. but you’re forgetting the power of Kentucky basketball.. A lot of people like to act as if Calipari had all these 5 star players before coming to UK, but actually didn’t… UK tends to turn solid recruiter in the great great recruiters… there is a reason UK has won 8 titles with 5 coaches, bc this place sustains itself! Not saying he will be, but I like our chances.. sure will miss Orlando tho… the kids loved him..

Ally, you used “Heron” 6…that’s SIX…times in that short segment. Try “he” once in a while.

if you look at pitt during 99-2005 when he was an assistant they had pretty good talent. People are forgetting the ability of UK to.make a good recruiter an amazing one. If he is getting top 15 players commit to.pitt he will do great here. I think people forget cal only had 5 five star players EVER prior to.joining UK. Keep that in mind. Its the combination that deadly uf he is a great recruiter in general

News flash for Barry Rohnssen, I never heard of you before coach O decided to leave UK. We hear you are a very good recruiter. Time will tell. At Kentucky, we expect nothing less then the BEST, this means as O’s successor, you are expected to bring in the Best of the Best, EVERY year. I hope you succeed
and that you are up to the task. That is what we expect from you. Nothing less. Now that you are at Kentucky, you have entered another world all-together. You now have access to almost every top recruit. You are expected to initiate, lure, sell and secure the BEST five-star recruits out there. Under Cal, recruiting never stops, its a year round 24/7 profession. Keeping UK atop the world of college basketball is your number one priority. Cal and the BBN has entrusted you with this oportunity. Don’t let us down. We EXPECT you to fulfil our recruiting needs in every sense. Keep the Five-Star mega talented players coming and you will be welcome here for along time. Nothing less will be tolerated.

Thanks a million. I didn’t realize the gravity of this position. I’ve been living under a rock for the past 5 or so years. I guess Cal was serious when he said “you guys are crazy”. Just for the record, I never said I was a great recruiter, that’s just what everyone in coaching circles seem to think – I heard even Cal believes it too. Crazy, huh?

Again, thanks. Anything else I need to know? Like, do I have to be on break to use the restroom?

News flash for Bluecat: you are the epitome of the douchey Cats fan the rest of the country hates. Believe it or not being a fan of a successful program doesn’t actually make you cool or important. Just someone who chose a team to follow. Follow up story: Barry Rohrssen doesn’t give two poops what you think. Closing story: BBN didn’t entrust him with anything. The athletics department did. An organization you aren’t actually part of just because you “are the biggest Cat fan there is. No, you don’t understand! The biggest!”

^ “you are the epitome of the douchey Cats fan the rest of the country hates.” Nailed it.

Bluecat is also the type of fan that 95% of the BBN can’t stand either.

Correction: Bluecat IS 95% of the fanbase in BBN. It is precisely this expectation of greatness that drives the program. Our 95% of the passionate section of the fanbase loathes the tepid 5% of the “every Cat is a winner!” portion of BBN that you represent. Fans of all great programs–UK, the Celtics, the Yankees, Manchester United, etc.–expect nothing less than the best. This is why we are called “fans.” Please refer to the origin of the term “fan” (as in fanatic) again.

      10:42 am April 21, 2014 Permalink

SeoulCat: No, its the 5% of BBN such as yourself that think you are a larger majority than you actually are, when in reality, you are making the rest of us look bad. Trust me on this.

I agree we shouldn’t settle for mediocrity and expect a level of success that a lot of other schools don’t, but the overzealous, high pressure expectations you place on the players and staff is borderline psychotic, and makes the rest of us think you should expand your lives a little bit further, rather than putting so much stock in teenage boys.

It’s hard to be impressed with a highlight video showing pickup games at the local YMCA.
