5-star Terrance Ferguson commits to Alabama

What a weekend for SEC basketball recruiting. One day after Bruce Pearl and Auburn landed five-star forward Mustapha Heron, five-star guard Terrance Ferguson committed to Avery Johnson and Alabama. Ferguson is considered the 11th best player in the 2016 class and picked the Crimson Tide over Kansas, North Carolina, Louisville, and others.

Kentucky and Florida have ruled the SEC basketball roost for longer than I can remember, but now, other programs in the league are finally making some noise. Most of the blue chips are still on the table, but Auburn has the 7th best recruiting class in the country for 2016, followed by Texas A&M at #8, Arkansas at #11, Georgia at #18, Florida at #22, LSU at #25 and Alabama at #27. Add in Malik Newman at Mississippi State and Ben Simmons and Antonio Blakeney at LSU and the next four years of SEC Basketball don’t seem so boring.

Bring it on.

I’m sure some fans would be content to watch Kentucky steamroll a hapless SEC, but not me…The basketball season is a lot more fun (albeit stressful) when the Cats are pushed and battle-tested come tournament time. When the 2003 team went undefeated in conference, as rare a feat as that is, it was even more impressive because of how strong the conference was that particular year. We all know conference power can be cyclical, and it finally appears as though the SEC is back on the upswing. And it’s funny…It is coinciding with Billy Donovan’s departure at Florida, who has basically been Kentucky’s only consistent competition since Calipari arrived.

Jim, shouldn’t you be worried about learning how commas work instead of basketball? Seems like that would be a much more useful way to spend your time. Who knows, maybe Jefferson County Junior College (officially known as University of Louisville) has some remedial English classes you could take.

    • “UahK”? Really? Dude, go back to comedy school. I like some good-natured ribbing, but that was not clever or funny in the least and was extremely lame.

  3. Others trying to climb the bball ladder the same way we’re trying to climb the ladder in the meat grinder known as SEC football. Thing is, schools like AU and UA can take a huge jump in bball sooner than we can in football for obvious reasons, In bball you get just a couple 4 and/or 5 stars and boom, top 10 or 20 recruiting class.

Anyway, I am PUMPED for football!!! I hope the excitement is well founded!!!

Louisville fans, for instance, like to say that the SEC is a weak basketball conference. However, they are only behind the Pac-12 (UCLA owns 11 of the 16…) and ACC in National Titles.
