We’d been naive not to concede that part of the reason the offense looked so good on Saturday is because the Louisville defense might be the worst Power 5 defense UK has played in the last 25 years. With that said, I felt UK really got its best players in the right positions all night long, the playcalling fit what Terry Wilson is best at, and the offensive line was absolutely dominant as UK put up its best offensive numbers of the year and of the Mark Stoops era. We will see if that kind of performance carries over into the bowl game against a much better opponent, but with many of these guys back in 2019, we might have got a taste of what the offense could be next season.
Run: 17 rushes, 83 yards
Pass: 8-14, 112 yards, 1 INT
Run: 213 rushes, 1229 yards, 13 TD (1 fumble lost)
Pass: 82-122, 919 yards, 6 TD, 4 INT (9 sacks allowed) (2 fumbles lost)
Recap: Deadly efficient outside of the incredibly stupid Bowden INT play. Terry Wilson was an absolute weapon against a pathetic UL defense and Snell-Rose pounded out almost 5 yards a carry over and over again. It’s been a key to the UK offense all season to be productive on 1st down.
Run: 17 rushes, 199 yards, 4 TD
Pass: 7-7, 112 yards, 2 TD, 1 sack allowed
Run: 161 rushes, 946 yards, 10 TD (3 fumbles lost)
Pass: 61-85, 629 yards, 5 TD, 1 INT (8 sacks allowed)
Recap: I’m not sure I’ve ever seen stats like this for a particular down. UK gained 311 yards on 2nd alone, scoring 6 of their 8 touchdowns in this series of plays. They gained almost 13 yards A PLAY overall with a sack included. It says a lot about UK getting the ball in the hands of it’s weapons and just how bad that UL defense was.
3rd Down and Long (6 yards or more)
Run: 2 rushes, 9 yards (converted 0 of 2)
Pass: 1-2, 32 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT (converted 1 of 2)
Run: 23 rushes, 116 yards (converted 2 of 23)
Pass: 25-46, 303 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT, 5 sacks allowed (converted 10 of 51)
Recap: While overall just a 1 for 4 conversion rate, the TD pass to Ali makes up for it all. 3rd and long has been a disaster for the Cats all season long with not much threat in the passing game, but if Terry Wilson can up his percentage of deep passes in 2019, the offense could become far more lethal.
3rd Down and Short (5 yards or less)
Run: 5 rushes, 12 yards (converted 3 of 5)
Pass: No Plays
Run: 49 rushes, 249 yards, 1 TD (converted 36 of 49)
Pass: 14-23, 106 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT, 3 sacks allowed (converted 12 of 26)
Recap: Solid conversion rate here in a game where the Cats never really needed it. The had been hitting around 70% for most of year and with the rushing attack at its best when needing 1-5 good yards, this situation is where UK wants to be.
