Stephen Johnson on campus today… Is he the next UK QB?

Drew Barker’s role as Kentucky’s starting quarterback may not be as solid as he and many others believed one month ago. Not with the new visitor on campus today.

Stephen Johnson, the JUCO quarterback you’ve heard all about recently, is in Lexington today for his official visit to the University of Kentucky. Interest is very high between both sides and a commitment would not come as a surprise while Johnson is in town.

If he does, he becomes an automatic contender to challenge Barker for the starting job. I’ve talked to several people who have seen the California native play, and they not only expect him to challenge Barker, they like his chances to win the job.

I’m no scout, but he does look very impressive in his highlights on Hudl:

This kid is insanely athletic with good feet, outstanding escapability, and a sweet touch on the ball. He could use the time before spring to add a couple pounds.I like what I see!

I wonder what caveat is associated with this kid? He appears to be too good to be available.

Calm down yall it’s a highlight reel it supposed to make him look good. He’s very good but we are competing with only Arkansas State and Hawaii for a reason.

    How bad is Drew?
This guy to compete for the starting job immediately?
I mean he looks good in the video, but, against who? I saw a bunch of small slow corners, small slow linemen and undersized, slow linebackers.
This is a kid that was not heavily recruited out of HS, Went to Grambling, got lost in the QB shuffle there, transferred out to JUCO in one of the lowest levels.
His stats look great and he looks good on film, but he is not playing against Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi State, Louisville, Alabama, Southern Mississippi, Florida, Vanderbilt, Missouri or South Carolina.
Tap the brakes folks. I too hope he is a great QB, but I also would like to keep it real.

Amen BluKudzu. Playing against SEC defenses is another world altogether.

How many more boards are you going to run to to post this? Something personal with the kid, or UK football?

If anything, he could be good for the defense to practice against a true dual threat QB.

If Gran and Hinshaw want him, that’s enough. Any depth at this position is a positive.

Hope he has the good sense to stay out of Richmond bars!

Well he could make a good scout team QB for when we play UL.

If he commits can he enroll this spring? Otherwise I don’t see his being a potential help next season. Not that we don’t need the depth.

This young man needs to be caoable of 3 things:
    1) pushing and challenging Barker for playing time; the last thing Drew needs is to get the starting nod without having to earn it.
    2) providing depth if he doesn’t start, be capable of playing and leading this team if Drew goes down so we can keep the redshirt on Gunner.
    3) providing speed behind center: i think it’d be pretty cool if he’s not the starter but we have a package of plays for this young man to come in and give a change of pace a time or two during certain games.
