BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Tuesday Morning Defensive Breakdown

ut-uk

A rundown of how the DEFENSE performed this weekend against Tennessee, as well as combined season statistics over the first 8 games of the season.

1ST DOWN
Run: 23 rushes for 103 yards (4.5 ypc), 1 TD
Pass: 3-5, 77 yards, 1 TD

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 155 rushes for 711 yards (4.6 ypc), 1 TD
Pass: 65-90, 940 yards, 4 TD, 3 INT, 4 sacks for -12 yards

RECAP: It doesn’t look pretty and it really wasn’t.  But, the passing stats are bolstered by the 75 yard bomb in the 2nd quarter.  The 0ther 4 UT passing plays went for 2 yards total.  The rushing stats are pretty standard what we have seen all season.  Not terrible but nothing to write home about.

2ND DOWN AND LONG (6 yards or more)
Run: 11 rushes for 118 yards (10.7 ypc), 1 TD
Pass: 4-7, 41 yards

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 59 rushes for 381 yards, 1 TD (6.5 ypc), 1 TD
Pass: 34-67, 365 yards, 2 TD, 1 sack for -5 yards

RECAP: Yikes, the rush defense was horrible here.  Gave up over 10 yards per carry for the game.  All told, 18 Tennessee plays netted 159 yards.  That’s never going to go well.

2ND DOWN AND SHORT (5 yards or less)
Run: 2 rushes for 5 yards (2.5 ypc), 1 TD
Pass: 2-3, 12 yards

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 44 rushes for 226 yards (5.1 ypc), 4 TD
Pass: 12-19, 66 yards

RECAP: Hard to judge much from these 5 plays.  UT scored on a 1-yard plunge.

3RD DOWN AND LONG (6 yards or more)
Run: 2 rushes for 1 yard (0.5 ypc) (converted 0 of 2)
Pass: 4-7, 72 yards, 1 TD, 1 sack for -7 yards (converted 4 of 8)

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 11 rushes for 57 yards, 1 TD (5.2 ypc) (converted 2 of 11)
Pass: 28-49, 329 yards, 1 TD, 4 sacks for -34 yards (converted 17 of 53)

RECAP: The worst game this season against the pass on 3rd down.  Overall, UK has been pretty good most of the year in 3rd and long.  Not so much on Saturday.  Something to keep an eye on for the final 4 games.

3RD DOWN AND SHORT (5 yards or less)
Run: 2 rushes for 11 yards (5.5 ypc) (converted 2 of 2)
Pass: 2-2, 15 yards (converted 2 of 2)

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 34 rushes for 139 yards (4.1 ypc), 7 TD (converted 25 of 34)
Pass: 8-14, 67 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 2 sacks for -16 yards (converted 6 of 17)

RECAP: Welp, that’s about as bad as you can do.  UK has been terrible against the run on 3rd and short all year long.  No ability to stop teams in tough situations.  Disappointing.
