The Cats are continuing to move forward with game preparations, now only one short week away from kicking off under the lights of LP Field. After treating yesterday like a Tuesday of game week practice, of course today was the theoretical Wednesday practice. Coach Stoops has liked the consistency so far, “I felt good about the last two days. Some days you come out and everybody is ‘gung-ho’ on that Tuesday, and then on Wednesday it tapers a little bit. I thought both days were good and consistent.”
It certainly isn’t going to take much to keep this team ‘gung-ho’. When you hit the same people day-after-day for 3 weeks it begins to become monotonous, especially when revenge is right around the corner. After feeling the same of a home-loss to in-state Sun Belt scrubs, A.J. Legree and the rest of the offense are ready to perform BIG, “I don’t think the coaches really have to say too much to fire us up for this game. Coach Brown gave us a quote, ‘we are The University of Kentucky’, but they really don’t have to say anything.” The only way to properly complete a revenge is by shoving it down Western’s throat, something on front of Legree’s mind, “we want to put up 50 points.”
They’ll be shooting for 50 with their offensive coordinator on the sideline during the game. WR Coach Tommy Mainord will be the eye in the sky, but Neal Brown prefers being in the middle of the action, “I like it down there, I think you get a better feel, when to use tempo and when not to.” The most important thing for Brown is being able to speak with his QBs face-to-face after they come off the field. Coach Stoops won’t be a part of the offensive playmaking process, except for all of the major decisions (like should we go for it, should we run a trick play, etc.), but Stoops did mention, “here or there I may feel like I have a homerun in my back pocket.”
Coach Stoops Quote of the Day
“We’ve always dabbled.” On using a mixture of 4-3 and 3-4 defenses.
Boone’s Butcher Shop Injury Report
Coach Stoops said today, “we should be pretty close to 100% on game day.” However CB Cody Quinn was once again absent from practice today, with several other players fighting dings and bruises in the final days of practice.
