Why didn’t JoJo Kemp play more?

One of the questions the Big Blue Nation kept asking tonight was “Why didn’t JoJo Kemp play more?”. Before the game, Mark Stoops vowed that Kemp would get more playing time, and moved him to the top of the depth chart. Kemp finished with 3 carries for 19 yards. After the game, Mark Stoops was asked about it:

Q: Jojo’s (Kemp) first carry, 11 yards. Don’t see him again until the fourth quarter. What happened there?

COACH STOOPS: I’m not sure, to be honest with you. In the rotation there. We got guys coming and going so much, really didn’t pay attention to that until I get to the film.

Neal Brown wasn’t able to shed more light on the situation either, saying it was Running Backs Coach Chad Scott’s call and it may have been a ball security issue. Kemp had this to say after the game:

On if there is frustration not getting touches …

“I just stay upbeat as I can and I’m on the sidelines cheering on my team. That’s the type of guy I am. I’m not one of those guys that holds my head down. I’m going to keep fighting, keep giving my all and at practice. Whenever my number’s called, I’m just going to go out there and do my best.”

On if he was frustrated with not getting carries …

“I mean yeah, just a little bit. It’s part of the game. I still have faith in my coaches. So whenever I get a chance I’m going to make the best (of it).”

Oh no we suck again! Can we accept the fact due to lack of talent and terrible play calling, that we are THE BOTTOM FEEDER in the SEC. Let’s stop pretending that this football program will be worth a damn for another two – three years

Oh gee where o where did my comment go. Was I too harsh on the offensive play calling? Was I too harsh on the 2 worst QB’s in the SEC? Actually what I said was the truth but the powers at KSR hate the truth if it treads on their little world too hard. Really pathetic KSR, really pathetic.

May have been the worst offensive play calling I seen in many years. Wait let me take that back. Since last year. Why hold Kemp out when he was the only effective runner we had. Cats clearly have no QB at all. Neither Smith or the pathetic Whitlow are anywhere near SEC caliber. Need to pull the red shirt off Towles and give him sole reins for the rest of the year. The more reps he gets now will help us next year. Barker is no where near SEC caliber if he cannot even put up 300 yds in high school. So he will need a for sure redshirt next year. Really gotta question the play calling. Not a single 3rd down conversion in 8 straight quarters means poor decisions on the side lines. This is beginning to be painful to watch.

So Mark Stoops has no idea what happens in a game until he watches the film later? Does he black out after opening kickoff and wake up in the locker room after the game? What a cop out answer to say he never realized his best running back wasn’t playing? And what the frick is Neil Brown talking about? It’s not the running backs coach’s decision, Bubba. That’s on you.

First off, anyone that thought we were primed to beat UF going into this game is an idiot. We were never in position to win this this year…huge talent gap still. But Neal Brown does need to get his head out of his butt and make sure playmakers like Kemp and Timmons are involved more. And holy crap our QBs suck; we literally cannot throw down field at all.

the poor execution bothers me most. The O lineman not blocking the guy closest to him, several times. Defense # 5 and #6 with very poor tackling attempts, if I can even call them an attempt. QB’s not making passes, these are short passes so no excuses, even decent high school qb’s can throw these short routes. Play calling seems to be playing scared. I know UF has a good defense but take it to them, look at what UCF did vs USC today, went right at Clowney and had tons of success. Sometimes you need to let your players believe you believe in them. Lastly throw the dang ball downfield early and often. Will open up even more running and short passing lanes. We throw deep only when it is 4th down and 20. I will still hold judgement on the staff until they have their players but I think we will lose some of our commits based on the job done so far.

Our offensive line didn’t play particularly well or awful except communication on assignments, but what’s worse they didn’t stick up for our skill players when they were getting bullied by gators. These playmakers are freshman and Florida goons gawed them up and took extra shots at them without any retaliation from our protectors. One particular play great catch by demarco Robinson and he breaks two tackles then that hate mongur #31 tackles him and holds his ankles after the play and trips him, Robinson turned around to defend himself and 31 sized him up while kevin Mitchell turned and trotted away. Maybe the lineman don’t know their roles on this team, but them are the strong guys that are suppose to be in the minds of our defense every time they provoke our skill players. The toughness from these guys needs to improve, if our fat boys are looking out for these young players then think how a potential recruit might view it.

Heck folks, don’t fire the coach, he was hired by Barnhart! Heck don’t fire Barnhart, eliminate the idiots that keep his sorry butt making the decisions to keep UK the laughing stock of college football, and the ultimate holder of the most humiliating record in NCAA BCS football.
Until UK gets serious about the football team, we will continue to get our butts whipped by WKU. Compete in the SEC? Not in my lifetime. Never.
What the hell are we doing here. This is a way down Florida team that came to Lexington and humiliated the University of Kentucky and their fans, after UK had two weeks to prepare. We can’t beat Western Kentucky. We can’t beat anyone with what was on the field tonight.

I would like to point out, we have held two nationally ranked teams under 30 points in the past two games. Stoops is the real deal and is making an impact on the defensive side of the ball. Right now it appears that our offense has some glaring deficiencies, and not keeping track of one of your most explosive playmakers is perplexing… Give them time though, there is some great young talent that will take this program to the next level.

im guessing one of the problems w/ FR RBs is that they have trouble picking up blitzes & blocking properly when they have to. may be wrong but we’ve had guys miss blitzes and not block properly so that may be a reason why some young guys aren’t on the field more

  33. Air Raid
    1:37 am September 29, 2013 Permalink

I can promise you it is not all lack of talent. We will never have the talent to compete in the sec running the air raid. Someone explain to me how the air raid is any different than Joker’s play calling. I believe the defense is on track and believe in what they are doing on that side of the ball as shown by the improvement week to week. Holding Uf to 24 points is as much as we can ask any UK defense. No matter the talent, the air raid will not work. Why doesn’t Bama, LSU, Georgia etc run it? They don’t wanna score 70 points a game? No, its because it doesn’t work. The big 12 teams that run the air raid scoring 50 points a game play sec teams and score 10. Gimmicks don’t work. The year auburn won the title, they beat uk (who played traditional style football with Joker as HC) by 3, 37-34 on a last sec field goal at auburn. That same year, the high powered gimmick offense of Oregon scored 17 points against Auburn on a neutral field. Gimmick offenses don’t work in the sec or every team in the conference would run it. I’m not saying Neal Brown has to go, but if he doesn’t have a plan be it will be the same ol same ol. Fyi, we scored more points through 4 games last year with playing a Kent st team that made it the top 25. Miami oh is the 2nd worst team in football, and we scored more against Kent St with Joker as the coach. I like the defense and run game, but offensive playcalling and substition pattern on both sides is as bad or worse than last 2 years. THATS COACHING, NOT A TALENT GAP.

  34. Air Raid
    1:48 am September 29, 2013 Permalink

I think Stoops can be the guy. But it won’t be with the Air Raid. If that means he has to fire brown then so be it, but the writing is on the wall when the defense is getting better week to week and the offense is steadily getting worse. We don’t need a miracle in the 1st year, but if the offense can’t show any improvement, and as a matter of fact is getting worse every game, it doesn’t take 3 years to see that the air raid and brown’s play calling won;t work, even if we had the 98 vikings team.

3 carries for 6+ yards a carry. You gotta watch film to understand why that happened? You can’t see that during a game? In 3 of the 4 games this staff hasn’t done squat to adjust for the second half. In fact we get worse in the second half. Dream all you want about it “getting better” as they get more “experience” but right now the criticism is deserved. They make virtually no adjustments for the second half. And it’s all on the backs of the offense. The D is doing it’s job.

It’s painfully honest at this point that the play calling is no better than it was under the previous coaching staff. That stupid reverse on 3 and 1 are you kidding me? The bubble screens, slip screens and draw plays on 3rd and long. How do you come out on fire with Whitlow driving down the field only to bring Smith in and have him kill all momentum on the drive. The alternating QBs kills momentum and doesn’t let either one get into a flow. Everyone knows its going to take 2-3 years to get the talent needed to compete but there are some bothersome coaching decisions going on. Kemp is a baller and needs to be used more period. This air raid is starting to look like the gimmick it was when Mumme was here.

I know we don’t have anywhere close to the talent we need/may get, this year was a transition year that was going to be ugly, and as Brad Pitt said in the movie Moneyball: It’s a process, It’s a process, It’s a process & this is at least a 3 year process; but I don’t understand the play calls or the timing of the calls at all !! We are running the ball way too much now against SEC defenses & not making these fast running backs into potential receivers, aren’t using the short 6-8 yard pass plays (especially in the corners or middle of the field) to get us close to the 1st down line (please no more bubble screens), and using our tight ends is now nonexistent. If we are going to get beat, we might as well try some pass plays to at least gain some yards to give the defense a rest. Hell even Whitlow can make a 6 yard pass. If the offense looks this bad in games, I would hate to imagine what it looks like during practice. The Alabama game is going to be UGLY!!

Unlike yourself, I don’t feel the need to trash the coaching staff, athletic director, players, and program. I understand that you Monday Morning Quarterbacks know everything there is to know about football, but maybe you could display a little patience for a coach that currently has the 7th rated recruiting class coming in next year. YOU NEED TALENT TO WIN.

I just wanted to point out to the person complaining about the air raid offense that Kentucky has yet to actually use the air raid. The play calling has been pro style plays out of the shotgun or pistol, not actually air raid plays. Occasionally they have used air raid style plays but they don’t follow through. The air raid may not be a long term solution to Kentucky’s football woes but it is an offense that appeals to talented quarterbacks and receivers, and we desperately need them.

I also want to say that I think Neal Brown is in over his head. His play calling is suspect on 3rd and short situations. Typically he puts George in and runs it up the middle (and everyone knows it’s coming) but last night he tries an end around on 3rd and 1. It’s like he has completely forgotten that about running off tackle. I think what is happening is he came into a program that doesn’t have the players to run his offense so he is stuck running an offense that he doesn’t believe in or truly understand.

Ok this is it. A new staff that has a learning curve ( inexperience as head and SEC coaches ), a team comprised of very low skilled players who would have trouble competing against a good high school team, no quarterback to speak of, but a running back who looks terrific but gets lost on the sidelines, the worst play calling at the worst times, no deep threats, a defense that looks weak and small, and all this gets worse for the next 3 games. One more win is all the Cats will get this year and maybe 3 wins next year. It is a long road that the Joker put this school on and we have no one to blame but former coach Brooks, Mitch Brainless the AD, and Joker, Joker, Joker. I hated that man when he was named head coach and hated him more every game he coached. He may be the dumbest assistant ( now ) in college football.

    9:47 am September 29, 2013 Permalink

    @54: Andrew

I just want to point out some things where you were correct, and others where you are completely incorrect.

    1. Yes the freshman look good, but 24-7 is not staying close. These freshman and the players (hopefully) incoming will help in a few years but don’t kid yourself or anyone else, Kentucky hasn’t put together a complete game yet this season.

    2. The defense did lose some talent, but for the most part no one is really criticizing the defense too much. The defensive players are doing their jobs for the most part, with some errors here and there but those are unavoidable.

    3. We are stuck with almost entirely Joker’s players, but that can’t be used as an excuse. Making excuses for losing only leads to more losing. That is the story of Kentucky football since the 50’s summed up in one sentence.

    4. You are correct in saying we can’t run a true air raid with the poor QB play, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. Part of the reason the air raid doesn’t work when they attempt to use it is because they don’t use it enough. Practice makes perfect, but this team has only practiced air raid principles in one game, the game against Miami OH. We know, or at least are almost certain, we are going to lose the next few games, so why not run the air raid? Maybe, just maybe, by the time Missouri and Tennessee come to town the offense will have the air raid down, giving them a chance to steal one of those games.

    5. People that think a program can turn into a contender in one year are fools, but it is not foolish to expect improvement. People expected a team that looked prepared and a coaching staff that put them in position to win, which they got on the Defensive side of the ball. People are not upset because Stoops didn’t turn Kentucky into a championship team overnight (which would definitely bring the NCAA to Lexington), they are upset that the offense isn’t showing signs of improvement as the season goes on or in comparison to last years’s.

    6. Fans that say abusive things towards the players and coaches do need to shut up, but criticizing poor performance is not abusive. It is within every fan’s right to state their opinion on the performance of the team and coaches as long as it is neither threatening or belittling. Kentucky football needs all its fans, and you should be glad that there are fans willing to speak critically, challenge the party line, and risk being called fair weather fans for boycotting because without these people Joker Phillips would still be on the Kentucky sideline.

Great post, ‘Just saying’. As usual, the truth is somewhere in the middle. And I think you have nailed it. Some fans go overboard with their mean-spirited criticism. No doubt. It’s best that they be ignored.
But not censored, KSR! And then some fans are perennial excuse makers. That’s weak. The time for making excuses is over. It’s been about 5 decades and counting. Let’s get this thing turned around, Stoops! ASAP!

Wow!!! A ton of mouth-breathers on here complaining about our team and a brand new coaching staff after just four games. UK fans are suppose to be the nations greatest fan base, yet we continually bitch and moan every chance we get. I laugh every time I see a “we need to fire Barnhart” comment, ecspecially after the good he’s done for the program as a while. I wish someone could come to your office and bitch about your lack of talent or work to the world. We want new recruits to sign up with us, but why the hell would they want to play for the slack-jawed nut sacks on this site.

Great article. I was watching with some Gator fans, and even they were asking why Kemp wasn’t playing, since he is from Florida. The excuses and comments after the game are beginning to same like the old staff that was over their head. At least Petrino would of owned up not playing the right players or the horrible play calling. So, we take the high road and will settle with 3 wins every year?

#16 LOL How is it clear that Towles doesnt have it? Coaching Staffs make mistakes evaluating players all the time!! If everyone agrees we had no chance against Florida and agrees we have no QB to throw the ball, What would it hurt to try Towles? Eventually if the offense keeps stinking Towles will play then we can judge him! I dont know if Towles is the answer but we need to see him on the field before im going to take this staffs word on it !! The started WHitlow game 1 and Max game 2 , so its clear there QB analysis isnt flawless

BAC05-great comments. This 15 % of UK fans that are negative on KSR are either UL trolls trying to make Big Brother look bad or UK fans who think in 4 games that we are ready for a bowl game. Support your team win or lose or shut the F$&@ up.

59 what u wrote isnt totally wrong but its fantasy land!! We understand we were gonna lose games>> But we see no progress on the field (oh on different topic Less then 1% of true freshmen QBs even play yet start So stop the Barker is gonna start next year crap) Prob is we see no progress we passed much better through 4 games last year..LOL i didnt expect to be good this year but i was hoping maybe in 5 years..Not sure about that cause i see no progress other then recruiting ,Which will almost certainly take a hit for the worse if we continue to look like one of the worst Div 1 college football schools

    15 rushing plays
    31 pass plays

If anyone thinks this remotely resembles Joker’s offense, they need to stick to watching basketball. Can’t believe people are complaining about struggling against the #1 defense in the #1 conference. Crazy.

67 – There, their, they’re. Learn ’em, then maybe people wont think you’re just a loudmouth jackass.

59 – The contradiction and/or ridiculousness in every one of your “bullet points” is hilarious.

My favorites: “You are correct in saying we can’t run a true air raid with the poor QB play, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. ”

“We are stuck with almost entirely Joker’s players, but that can’t be used as an excuse. Making excuses for losing only leads to more losing.”

“…they are upset that the offense isn’t showing signs of improvement as the season goes on or in comparison to last years’s.”

Compare with our 2012 loss to Florida…

Joker, 38-0 loss: 30 pass plays for 60 yds, 29 rush plays
Stoops, 24-7 loss: 31 pass plays for 125 yds, 15 rush plays

A loss is a loss, but yesterday’s game was a lot more competitive and fun to watch. This isn’t basketball… Timmons and Hatcher aren’t going to have Wall and Cousins’ impact. It will take a few years.

What exactly is fun about watching Florida throw and run at will on us and possess the ball for 3/4 of the game? You apologists keep harping on the closer score but if that kid ( their new QB ) had gotten starter reps since the end of last season FL would have dropped 45 at least on us.

You have been Kragthorped…If your head coach and offensive coordinator don’t realize your best running back is not getting touches and have to watch the film…well you got problems. Wonder if A&M coach would forget to Manzell in the game?

    @66: Connecticut Chris
First how am I in fantasy land? I said the Florida game wasn’t close, which it wasn’t. I said there would only be 1 win in the second half of the season if the offense doesn’t get in gear, and that is true with that one win being Alabama St. I also never said anything about Drew Barker let alone him playing as a freshman, so I am almost completely certain didn’t read anything I said.

    @70: theSkinny81

You my friend are an idiot with very poor reading comprehension. We’ll go in order through my quotes that you took completely out of context

    1. You seem to have a problem with my line of reasoning that the staff should run the air raid despite deficiencies on the team. The fact of the matter is Kentucky doesn’t have the personnel to run any offense well. The air raid might just give them a chance against teams like Tennessee and Mississippi St. As unfit for the air raid as most of the offensive players are, they are even more unfit for a pro style attack. I take it from your comment that they should go out and try to pound the rock like Alabama, but here’s a news flash, Kentucky isn’t Alabama. If they use the air raid in these games where they have no chance (and let’s be honest, barring a miracle they have no chance) then maybe they will be comfortable enough in the system by the time they get Tennessee to pull an upset. It’s beats the alternative, using the same system where they are outmanned week in and week out so that when Tennessee rolls around they are comfortable in a system where they are outmanned.

    2. You can’t continue the “Joker’s players” excuse. There are no excuses for poor performance. If you lose, figure out what you did wrong and correct it but don’t make excuses because you’ll just come up with new ones the next time. Kentucky has been making excuses for decades and look where it has gotten us. It started with “we don’t have the Bear anymore”, gradually becoming “Kentucky is a basketball state”, “we were recently on probation”, “we’re in the SEC”, and now it is “Joker’s players”. So what now? What if they play bad the next 2 seasons? At some point the excuses have to stop and I vote they stop now. New coaching staff, new level of recruits, new facilities coming, why not a new attitude, one that embraces adversity and gets better for it rather than shying away and claiming a disadvantage. Of course no excuses is a concept embraced by winners, so I can forgive you for being unfamiliar with it.

    3. I stand by my statement that people are disappointed with how the offense has progressed through the season thus far. Yesterday was game 4 but the offense looked lost, like it was game 1. It is not unreasonable to expect the offense to look like they have a basic knowledge of the game in game 4.

Look far ward to seeing 15,000 in seats come November. OC Brown…worst play calling ever!! No risk no reward…UK mantra! I’m done for the year…cannot take gay offensive play calling AGAIN!!

74 – Thanks for the compliments. Stay classy.

Now, let me reiterate what I took from your statements.

“You are correct in saying we can’t run a true air raid with the poor QB play, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. ” Translation: Our QBs suck and accuracy has been suspect, but hey, let’s air it out anyway and see what happens. It’s just practice anyway.

“We are stuck with almost entirely Joker’s players, but that can’t be used as an excuse. Making excuses for losing only leads to more losing.” Translation: Joker left us with Tates Creek High baseball players, but there’s no excuse why we can’t compete with the Yankees.

“…they are upset that the offense isn’t showing signs of improvement as the season goes on or in comparison to last years’s.” Translation: We went up against one of the best defenses in the SEC, but that’s no excuse. Sure we had more first half offense than Tennessee did against them last week, but that don’t matter!

    Here’s another tip:
