Which offensive lineman is most likely to redshirt: Tate Leavitt or Landon Young?

Many expected JUCO transfer Tate Leavitt to be an immediate contributor to the offensive line when he arrived on campus in the spring, but the 6’6″ 310 lbs. tackle was nowhere to be found on today’s two-deep depth chart. In fact, Mark Stoops told reporters today that, if possible, the staff would like to redshirt Leavitt this season.

“From what we’ve seen, I think Tate is getting better, and if we can do it, we’d like to redshirt him. We’ll see how that goes. That way, down the road, we know he’ll be a quality football player, but as you know, it’s quite different stepping in and playing at this level. We’ll see how he comes along. He’s also a guy that we’ve moved inside and he’s looked very good inside as well.”

Another player they’d love to redshirt? True freshman Landon Young, who is listed as the second string left tackle behind Cole Mosier. Stoops said Young will be ready to go, but he hopes they won’t have to use him.

“A guy like Landon Young, we’ll see, because you know, we have some flexibility with the sixth, seventh, eighth offensive lineman, the next best off the bench. We have the flexibility to put someone in at guard and kick a guard to tackle with George Asafo-Adjei and some of those guys. We’ll see how it goes, we’ll see how he progresses. He’s practicing with the two-deep and he’ll be ready to go.”

Landon’s definitely good enough to play this fall, but remember, in football, redshirting is a luxury and man, wouldn’t it be nice to give Landon and Tate another season to develop?

Why not use them on the defensive line this year? We need big bodies…
