What is UK’s best chance for a conference win?

John Sommers II, Reuters

John Sommers II, Reuters

Your UK football stat of the day comes from The Cats’ Pause’s Jon Hale, who tells us that of the 56 players listed on UK’s Week 1 depth chart, only SEVEN have played in an SEC game UK won. Wow. That’s actually pretty depressing.

Surely that will change this season, right? Here’s the schedule:

08/30/14 vs. UT Martin Lexington, Ky. 12:00 p.m. ET
09/06/14 vs. Ohio Lexington, Ky. 3:30 p.m. ET
09/13/14 at Florida Gainesville, Fla. 7:30 p.m. ET
09/27/14 vs. Vanderbilt Lexington, Ky. TBA
10/04/14 vs. South Carolina Lexington, Ky. TBA
10/11/14 vs. ULM Lexington, Ky. TBA
10/18/14 at LSU Baton Rouge, La. TBA
10/25/14 vs. Mississippi State Lexington, Ky. TBA
11/01/14 at Missouri Columbia, Mo. TBA
11/08/14 vs. Georgia Lexington, Ky. TBA
11/15/14 at Tennessee Knoxville, Tenn. TBA
11/29/14 at Louisville Louisville, Ky. TBA

Here are my picks UK’s best chances for a conference win, ranked from easiest to hardest:

1. Vanderbilt: Dores fans are still crying about James Franklin leaving, and although Derek Mason talks the talk, this game is in Commonwealth and by far UK’s best shot for a conference win.

2. @ Missouri: Picks 2-4 were tough for me, but Mizzou lost a lot of players and this could be a huge win for the Cats on the road.

3. @ Florida: Tradition says the Cats will fall on their faces in the Swamp. The game is already circled in Will Muschamp’s calendar because if the Gators lose, he’ll probably be fired. However, this is the game for this young squad to show that the old Kentucky football is gone, and if the offense is running on all cylinders heading into Gainesville, I like the Cats’ chances for an upset.

4. Mississippi State: This is a trendy upset pick because the Cats hung with the Bulldogs last year in Starkville; however, I’m not as eager to jump on the bandwagon as others. Mississippi State returns most of their starters and will be very good this year. But, UK always plays them competitively and the game is in Commonwealth, so we’ll see.

5. @ Tennessee: Tradition doesn’t bode well for the Cats in Neyland either, and they’ll be coming off a bruising game against Georgia.

6. South Carolina: I’ve noticed a lot of people picking this as an upset special for Kentucky. I’m not sure why. South Carolina is right up there with Georgia as the elite in the East, and Spurrier is still Spurrier.

7. Georgia: I wish, but no.

8. @ LSU: Again, I really wish, but no, especially in Death Valley. Tailgating will be nice, though.

Would you buy Butch Jones in his second year…at Tennessee? UK hasn’t won in Knoxville since ’76. Not saying it’s not possible….but probably not going to happen this year.

This could happen…..next year. We have a lot more talent but it is not enough and too young to mustard 7 wins this year. It would take a lot of teams piling up injuries and just playing a bad game for us to win 3 or 4 sec games. To get to seven wins we will need to win 3 sec games and go undefeated out of conference.

Too soon for any chance except Vandy and maybe Mizzou. Vandy only because we play them at home, and it will not be easy at all. Still think Mizzou wins going away after we battle them for 3 qtrs. Maty Mauk has a chance to be really, really good. As for Florida, are you joking? Even if the offense is hitting on all cylinders after playing UT Martin and Ohio (chuckle), an early hot September game in the Swamp will show how thin our roster still is. And Florida will have a top 5-10 defense this year. We better get Vandy or play them really close, or the wheels may come off by the time the Miss St game rolls around….

4 MSU 10/90 a much better team than Mizzu and UT, They could finish 3rd in the West this year.
    5 GA and UF 1/99
7/8 USC and LSU will win by 3 touchdowns or more.

It’s because of how well we played them last year. The final score isn’t a good indicator of how close that game was because SC scored a couple of possessions in a row at the end. UK played them all the way to the mid-4th quarter last year.

Besides, if Joker can do it…

I sincerely doubt we will win, but it can’t hurt to have a glimmer of hope for it. Kind of like playing the lotto!

Plus, beating Spurrier pretty much guarantees a visor/clipboard slam fest and an amazing post-game presser that will live on YouTube forever. We can dream just for that possibility.

Lots of people saying Mizzou here… I really don’t see Mizzou losing that much from last year. Matty Mauck was arguably better than their starting QB last year and Mizzou runs a pretty consistent system. They will be very tough on the road.

A huge part of their offense ran through Green-Beckham though, and he’s gone. Too bad for them he couldn’t keep out of trouble, he was a serious threat on offense. He’s like if Willie Cauley-Stein played football. Hey speaking of, did you guys know that WCS played football?

Funny we are trying to figure out ONE SEC team we can beat.
How many other coaches in the conference would keep their jobs if they only won a conference game?
We’re happier than a pig in slop just to be in the SEC in football.
No one has told us yet we have to be competitive.
    Baby steps.
If we win two is there enough money is the athletic budget to keep our version of ‘Stoops’ at Lexington?
Wonder who came calling to draw him away last year to get him that million dollar raise?

    • aTom
      12:08 pm August 27, 2014 Permalink

Can you show me a link where Mark Stoops got a million dollar raise last year? He had a year added to his contract, but no raise.

It’s no surprise that you’re a reactionary idiot but at the very least try to stick to verifiable facts rather than making things up.

The only thing funny here is your repeated and asinine use of the words “we” in reference to Kentucky fans. Maybe you’re more comfortable talking basketball and picking a “football school” to follow? At least as long as the basketball team is good, that is.

The good thing about sidewalk/fake fans like you is that you’re so painfully obvious that it makes you easy to ignore.

I dont get this “holier than thou” talk of South Carolina…. We are talking about a team last year that was also picked to win the east, had an experienced starter at QB plus Clowney….How many did we lose by down there with friggin Jalen Whitlow at QB?

Oh yeah, thats right a whopping 7 points….and if Josh Forrest makes a tackle…we get the ball with 2 minutes to go with a chance to tie!

You cant convince me that South Carolina loses Clowney and Shaw and are all of a sudden better….No way…. Plus the game is in CWS now.

I wonder if some of you even watched the game last year…Including Ms. Tyler Thompson

There have been at least two stories this week stating we COULD lose to UT-Martin. How can we expect to beat any SEC teams if we are concerned about UT-Martin? Maybe UT-Martin is being hyped to help sell tickets? Mizzou was the East Champ last season. Do we really think they have dropped so far that beating them on the road is our second best chance for a win?

  17. WTF?!
    1:29 pm August 27, 2014 Permalink

No, tailgating will not be nice at LSU. That place is a swamp, literally and figuratively. The *only* way it would be tolerable to go to a game there is if they had not won a game in about three years and were not expected to win one for three more and your team was ranked #1. Even then, those drunken morons would be close to unbearable.

    1-Nov at Missouri 22
    8-Nov Georgia 10
    15-Nov at Tennessee 55
    29-Nov at Louisville 16

This is the schedule with with each team’s ranking based on advanced statistical analysis from SB Nation. Vandy and Tennessee are the only teams we should realistically entertain thoughts of upsetting. Beating any of these teams is not impossible, but most are VERY unlikely. The main reason I copied and pasted that chart is that anecdotal evidence is garbage. Saying things like “tradition doesn’t bode well” is fine if you’re interested in fluff. If you’re legitimately interested in making a list of possible upsets using statistics of past performance and current recruiting is the logical and most insightful way to go.

    • St. Paul Raiders
      2:19 pm August 27, 2014 Permalink

The reason we lost to UT for 26 straight years wasn’t tradition, it was because they had better players, top to bottom, than us. It’s hard to imagine that and no fan wants to believe that we could have been so far inferior to another school (two counting UF) that we couldn’t even get lucky once and pull out a win. That finally happened with Matt Roark and a diminished UT team.

What’s are projected ranking? Based on this, 6-6 or 7-5 is a legitimate possibility if we’re around 60th or so. We’ve had better recruiting classes the last two years than R Brooks ever got & we did ok with him around.

Why cheer for a team or even call yourself a fan if its always naysaying & pessimism? We have some players now and will be competitive in every game this year. And when you’re competitive, you have a chance. We were close last year in several losses. We’re better this year and we will be bowling! Go Cats!!!
