What UK Learned Spending Saturday Watching College Football

Unless it’s a 7:30 kickoff, college football players rarely get to watch their peers.  The bye week is the exception to that rule.  On their only weekend off, they saw a few things from their SEC foes:

  • UK played Bama closer on the road than Tennessee did at home.
  • Missouri completed only two passes beyond the one of scrimmage against Florida.
  • Miss. State lost in 2OTs to BYU. They could’ve won it in regulation, but their QB threw a fourth quarter interception while in field goal range.
  • Vanderbilt won at Georgia.

“It doesnt surprise me. I know what kind of team it was.”  Mark Stoops’ win over Vanderbilt looked more impressive after taking down Georgia between the hedges.  “Just because they don’t have a lot of wins, that’s a good football team.  We knew that.”

Vandy’s win was validating for fans, but that wasn’t the eye-opener for his players.

“You realize a lot of people’s margin for error is very small. On any given Saturday, things go different ways, and I think they realize some of the good things that we’ve done.”

The attrition in the East has the Cats currently tied for second.  It will widen the eyes for many fans, but Stoops can’t let his team get to far ahead of themselves.

“If we handle our business today and the rest of this week, let’s go take care of business this Saturday, and then we’ll worry about the next one,” Stoops said.  “We do some things well and we need to continue to build on that.  They realize that we have a good opportunity if we continue to progress and continue to get better.”

And USM lost to UTSA, yes UTSA. A horrible NMSU took us to the 4th quarter. Yes Vandy beat UGA but my guess is UGA overlooked them as they play UF next and UGA is not that great to overcome mistakes. Stat wise UGA dominated. Facts are we have beaten 3 bad teams, all at home and struggled to win all 3. Luckily we still get to play some bad teams so there is a chance but we have no shot vs any decent team. UT will kill us, UL can name the score against us. Bama game was not as close as the score shows, they played like they were bored and they probably were, they knew they just needed to show up and they had a W. For some reason we are just not that good, my 4 biggest reasons are 1. Oline, 2. Dline 3. QB passing 4.Defense inability to make 3rd down stops. Outside of Drew hitting some bombs in 1st half vs USM we have not thrown accurate passes. Play calling still seems to be an issue though I think reasons 1 and 3 may contribute to that. D gives up big plays way too often, especially on 3rd downs. I am very frustrated as I expected to at least compete vs the better teams we play and we have not. Losing to USM is still not acceptable and the fans around me kept saying how good USM is, NO they are not good but we were just worse. We are currently ranked in the mid 80’s out of 128 teams and that seems about right based on what we have done, that is not acceptable.
