UK Football highlights playing on a loop in Times Square

On the corner of 45th Street and Broadway in New York City’s popular Times Square district, you’ll find retail stores, the Minskoff Theatre and… UK football highlights from the Missouri game? What?!

That’s right — in addition to the images of Josh Allen, Benny Snell, Lynn Bowden and Kash Daniel that were running throughout Times Square on Monday, you can now see video of the best moments of Kentucky’s big win at Mizzou over the weekend. The highlights are playing on a video board on one of the most crowded corners in the entire world:

I have no idea how much it must cost to lock down that real estate, but it’s awesome and worth every penny for the exposure.

CJ Conrad catching a game-winning touchdown right above the Naked Cowboy and Elmo? What a time to be alive.

      Why would taxpayers be responsible for this lol…. it’s not like we got a criminal deal on our arena and left the taxpayers to foot the bill

      Oh, good grief…

      The $16,000 for the ad campaign came from UK football’s marketing budget.

      UK’s is one of the relative handful of D1 athletic programs that routinely “pays its own way” – only 14 programs did so in 2016-17 – and they receive no government/taxpayer funding; as UK phases out the student athletics fee, the UKAA is returning that money to the school each year (about $650K in 2016-17). Not only do they cover their own expenses, they put money into the University’s general fund almost every year – $4.7 million in 2016-17.

      Now, you can feel free to direct your complaint to the state’s other Division 1 programs, all of which took subsidies from their university’s general funds in 2017-18:

      * Louisville: $2.1 million net (received $4.1 million, returned $2 million)
      * EKU: $13.1 million
      * WKU: $13.7 million net (received $17.4 million, returned $3.7 million)
      * Murray: $8.1 million net (received $9.0 million, returned $900K)
      * Morehead: $10.3 million
      * NKU: $12.4 million

      So, while UK pays its own way and puts millions into the UK General Fund, the other D1 programs burned through $59.7 million from their schools’ respective general funds.

    Seems like a waste of money honestly.

      Maybe we’re going after some of those big time NYC recruits who usually end up with Ohio State or Michigan

      I think it’s an awesome idea too. Nothing wrong with extending the brand. We keep trending like this it will only bring good things. If Kentucky wins Saturday we’ll be the talk of the college football world.

      Some outlets are still predicting Florida to a better bowl than us. My guess is this is to get the hype to lock a better bowl and make up the money or get better ratings on games

    CJ’s catch at the end, along with Lynn’s Punt Return will go down as 2 iconic moments in UK football history. So glad I got to see both of them. Beat the Dawgs!! Go Cats!!

    Whomever at UK Sports PR decided this was smart is an absolute genius. Think people: NYC…where the Heisman is being given out. This kind of thing is what changes people’s minds about this program. Winning is mandatory of course, but stuff like this is the icing on the cake. Take advantage of this fantastic team and make UK a world wide brand in FOOTBALL!! Who knows?! Maybe a 10 year old kid walks by, sees our guys in blue and white 50-feet tall, and dreams of being like them one day!!
    Whatever the cost, the publicity this brings is priceless. Worth its weight in gold.

      I’m not, but I wouldn’t mind their paycheck. And the fund with which the likely get to use for marketing.
      I’d probably just order a bunch of UK stickers and pay a couple kids $20 to plaster them on everything.

    I’m 69 so I only have 9.4 years left so I’m going to embrace and enjoy every moment with this team. Not worrying about who’s paying for UK billboards, checkerboard anything, Corso, Tebow and Gameday. Whatever happens the rest of the way, it’s been a helluva historic year. Proud of those guys.
