UK Football Coach & Kansas State Alum is Stuck in the Middle of the Sweet 16

Michael Smith is in a peculiar position.

Mark Stoops’ new wide receivers coach has only been on Kentucky’s campus for two months.  Thursday night his new school will face his former school, Kansas State, in the Sweet 16.  When he walks on the football practice field Thursday morning, he will not just be wearing Kentucky blue.

“I will be wearing blue on top, but I will definitely have purple on underneath.  I’m not going to sit here and lie to you,” Smith said after this morning’s practice, Kentucky’s first spring practice in more than ten days.

You can’t blame him.  Smith’s football life began at Kansas State.  He worked his way from walk-on, to the Big Eight’s second-leading receiver in conference history.  Once he was finished playing professionally, he returned to Manhattan where he spent 16 years on the coaching staff, most recently in 2012.

An exceptional athlete and outstanding wide receiver, Smith was great on the gridiron, but not on the hardwood.

“I was the worst black basketball player,” he laughed.  “I ran track.”

I can appreciate his candor….but that’s definitely not the right thing to say. Try harder coach.

You’re right. He should’ve said “f my alma matter who helped me get to where i am today”

Much ado about nothing. He doesn’t need to try harder of apologize for an honest answer. It would be different if he was an assistant basketball coach.

You mean that he was just a “bad basketball player” instead of a “bad BLACK basketball player?” hahaha

Why would it be different if he were an assistant basketball coach?

K State has done more for him than UK ever could, most likely. I have zero issues with his comments. He’s a K State guy who currently coaches for UK.

Thank you rack em for showing that some of BBN has common sense. Great comment.

Why keep it to himself or not say that? He spent so many years there, {20 or so} he has to have great relationships with several people there. Good for him for staying loyal, something the world needs more of. Not like he said he hopes UK loses, he will have blue on top which is great since he has been here a few months and not 20 years. Amazing how stupid BBN can be at times.

Would you knuckleheads expect a Kentucky alum to diss his home school. Some of you appear to be mentally challenged. Nothing wrong with following your old school. Let him get a few seasons under his belt in Lexington and see how loyal he is. He will grow roots here. I can’t be the sole UK alum that has any common sense. It is just that the crazy ones are more vocal than the sane ones.

Needs to be UK, or needs to be a coaching vacancy.

What are you people talking about? No one is saying he should alienate Kansas state. He just needs a better answer or to give no comment. Really not that hard people. Do you go around saying stupid stuff at your job or do you play to your audience? Should coach cal say he’s pulling for both schools if the football team was playing Clarion or unc Wilmington? Coach smith just needs to give a more diplomatic answer or no answer at all. It’s just not a good look.

What if coach Payne said he would be wearing red and blue the week of the ul vs U.K. football game? Not a good look is it?

Y not say “I’ll be routing for the wildcats that day!” Leave which wildcats for others to chew on…
