247 Sports released their mid-season player rankings, based off their production through the first two months of the season. Kentucky has plenty of young talent, but not necessarily the playmaking superstars to compete with more experienced players. Still, two Wildcat defenders made the list, C.J. Johnson at #154 and Josh Forrest at #206.
I doubt many had Johnson tabbed to be one of the best of the best, but when he was at his healthiest, the defensive tackle had 30 tackles in two games. Forrest leads UK with 58 tackles, putting him 4th in the SEC with 9.1 a game. He also has 3 tackles for loss, tying Denzil Ware for second behind C.J. Johnson. Forrest leads the Cats in sacks with 2.5. He’s been excellent in pass defense, breaking up five passes and hauling in an interception.
A few other regional players made 247’s list. Three from WKU – #131 QB Brandon Doughty, #139 WR Taywan Taylor, #174 OT Forrest Lamp – and two from UofL – LB James Burgess at #219 and DE Sheldon Rankins at #243.
