Turnovers will NOT be a Problem for Stephen Johnson, or Stephen Johnson will not Play

Last year ball security was a problem for quarterback Stephen Johnson.  Eddie Gran issued Johnson an ultimatum: fix the problem, or else.

“Well I don’t think there’s any question he’s going to get it fixed, because he won’t be playing. And he knows that.”

Johnson helped lead Kentucky to seven wins last season, but it could have been more if he took better care of the ball.

“We put our defense in some really bad situations last year,” Gran said.  “If we get half of those turnovers, and cut them in half, we’re going to be top of the league. I think we could have won a couple more games if don’t turn the ball over.”

Johnson agrees.  “We know that we could’ve done a lot better than we did last year, won a few more games than we did.  Everybody knows that.”

To protect his job and earn extra wins, Johnson has done two things to address the problem in the offseason.

“That’s just working on ball protection, something we’ve done a lot during the spring and the summer.  We’re working on keeping the ball in the right spot so you don’t give the defense the opportunity to take it away from you.  The other thing is just getting stronger.”

Johnson used his year of experience to learn from his mistakes.  It should pay off in 2017.  If it doesn’t, there are two other quarterbacks anxiously awaiting to take his place.

There should be the same rules for coaches, when it is 2nd and 20 you don’t run a 150 pound back into the middle of the line!
