Tributes pour in for John Schlarman

It’s a somber day around the Big Blue Nation. One of the best to ever represent the University of Kentucky has passed away. John Schlarman was 45.

The former All-SEC Kentucky offensive lineman spent his final years building the Big Blue Wall into one of the best offensive lines in the country. He touched the lives of so many people. Schlarman’s former teammates, colleagues, the players he coached and the media members who interviewed him over the years have shared tributes to a leader unlike any other.

From Josh Paschal, who received his cancer diagnosis right around the same time as Schlarman:

Rest In Peace Coach Schlarman. The definition of a true warrior. You were the most selfless coach I’ve ever been around and always put others before yourself.

When we got diagnosed back in 2018, you always asked how my fight was going and whenever I asked about yours, you would have a positive outlook on it all. I looked up to you in so many ways because you never gave up. No matter the circumstance, you kept faith and showed up to work everyday. The relationship we had was deeper than football because we related on two things that connected us. Christ and our fight. I have no doubt that you are in a better place and take care. Love you coach and thank you for everything.

I think we need a Schlarman statue. It doesn’t need to be made of gold or larger than life. But when somebody goes through everything he did, and still fought as hard as he did, his legacy and impact deserves a statue.
