Towles will get almost all of the reps, but Stoops will be “very disappointed” if Reese Phillips doesn’t play

DSC01634

Mark Stoops is wrapping up his weekly press conference, and when asked about backup quarterback Reese Phillips, he said that although Patrick Towles will get almost all of the reps, he will be “very disappointed” if Reese doesn’t get some playing time against UT-Martin. “I would love to play him. But Patrick needs the reps. I will be very disappointed if he doesn’t play.”

Don’t misread Stoops’ desire for Reese to get playing time as kindling for an early quarterback controversy. In fact, Stoops stopped one reporter before he could even ask that question, emphasizing that Patrick is the starting quarterback. “He has the keys. He’s going to go through some ups and downs. That’s anyone in any position,” Stoops said. “He’s not on a short leash. He won the job. He is the starting quarterback.” Stoops said he fully expects Patrick will have a big game. “It’s certainly important for Patrick to get off to a fast start. It’s important for him to play well, and he will.”

they’ve all kicked your mom in her nuts

  3. I think part of this is Stoops just hopes we put the hurtin’ on UT Martin that we all want to see and that way backups can get valuable PT against another team instead of in practices, scrimmages, etc.

Just what I was going to say. Stoops is hoping we’ll have the game well in hand by the 3rd quarter. He wants Reese to get live reps by playing the fourth quarter, both to give him the experience and to evaluate him as the backup. “I’d be very disappointed” basically means “I’ll be really, really disappointed (PISSED) if we don’t have that game won by the third.”

#3 I’m with you. I interpreted it as we need to get all over UT-Martin and then Reese will get some snaps. That’s exactly what I’m looking for on Saturday.

    What happened to Maxwell Smith?

I think Max’s arm is still less than 100%, and he has only gotten about half the reps as the other Gus throughout camp. Kind of a situation where it’s an older guy with an injury who has played decently in the past. You kind of know what you have with him and trust him, but you don’t want to risk his arm and you want to give reps to your younger guys who will be with the program for a few more years. I really think Maxwell would have been a great QB; good arm, nice touch, and very smart. Shame about the injuries. He has a very bright future in coaching.

I think this season will be alot of fun for us. The offense will come alive and put some points on the board. I also think that fans will be impressed with our QB play and our offense overall. I predict we win this game 49-14. Go Cats!!!
