Today on KSR: Hello, Sawyer Smith

Can Kentucky beat Florida without Terry Wilson? That’s the question on the mind of every Kentucky fan this morning.

In case you’ve been offline all weekend, Wilson went down in the third quarter of Kentucky’s win over Eastern Michigan with a knee injury. It was clear when he was carted off the field that the prognosis wasn’t good; yesterday afternoon, we found out he suffered a torn patellar tendon in his left knee, ending his season.

“I’m very sorry about Terry’s injury,” Mark Stoops said in a press release from UK. “He has done so much for our program over the last two seasons, both in leadership and his production on the field. As a team captain, he will continue to be an important part of our team and we look forward to him returning to the field when he has recovered.”

Enter Sawyer Smith, the graduate transfer from Troy. With Terry out, Smith stepped in and completed five of nine passes for 76 yards and two touchdowns. His first pass attempt as a Wildcat was a 54-yard touchdown to Ahmad Wagner. His final pass of the night was a two-yard toss to Lynn Bowden in the end zone. So far, so good, but for Kentucky to beat Florida, Smith will to have to be great.

Adam Luckett and Nick Roush will have much more on Smith as the day and week goes on. Here’s what else is on tap today.

Mark Stoops speaks at noon

We’ll certainly hear more about how Kentucky will move on without Terry at Stoops’ weekly press conference. We’ll have a live stream on the site starting around 11:55 a.m., breaking news as it happens, and a full recap afterwards.

We’ll get a new depth chart

Obviously there will be some changes at the quarterback spot. After the game Saturday night, Stoops said redshirt sophomore Walker Wood will back up Smith. Check the site around 11 a.m. to see what other changes take place.

The Florida line is moving

Yesterday, Florida opened as an 11-point favorite, but the line has already moved to -8.5 in some places. Honestly, given the news about Terry, I’m surprised the line moved in that direction, but that’s just how skeptical some people are about the Gators, I guess.

We’ll find out the Mississippi State game time

Game times will be released for Week 4 today. Will it be an early, mid-afternoon, or late game in Starkville? Here’s the SEC slate:

9/21 – TBD Southern Miss (2) Alabama
9/21 – TBD (4) LSU Vanderbilt
9/21 – TBD (8) Auburn (16) Texas A&M
9/21 – TBD Tennessee (9) Florida
9/21 – TBD San Jose State Arkansas
9/21 – TBD Cal Ole Miss
9/21 – TBD Kentucky Mississippi State
9/21 – TBD South Carolina Missouri
9/21 – 8:00 PM (7) Notre Dame (3) Georgia CBS

This feels like a 7:30 p.m. SEC Network game to me.

Come see the KSR Football Podcast at KSBar

To get you ready for the Florida game, the KSR Football Podcast will be broadcasting live from the stage at KSBar around 6 p.m. Come on out to enjoy the show, register for the chance to win tickets to Bourbon and Beyond, and hang out for tonight’s Monday Night Football doubleheader of the Texans vs. the Saints and the Broncos vs. the Raiders.

It’s still weird to see Randall Cobb in a Cowboys uniform, but his first touchdown was a beaut:

Did you see John Calipari’s comments about Micheal Avenatti’s claims?

Yesterday morning, Calipari hosted a group of local reporters for a preseason roundtable, including our own Drew Franklin. We can’t release all of his comments until this coming Sunday, but UK did allow us to share Cal’s remarks on Michael Avenatti’s Nike allegations, specifically Kenny Payne’s texts with Nike EYBL director Carlton DeBose. In short, Cal’s not worried about it and doesn’t have a lot of faith the NCAA will handle the allegations or the FBI’s findings fairly. Same.

As a Cowboys fan, I couldn’t be happier to watch Cobb wear the star. Was great to see him come through and get the TD!

I believe we will not only survive Wilson’s injury, but possibly benefit from it. Our running game does not require Wilson to thrive, and Smith is s better pocket passer. I can envision the offense using our tight ends more, and shifting slightly to a more conservative passing game. Let’s see if Smith has the poise to lead this group, I think he can.

I agree. Sadly the media, and this site in particular, takes great joy in showing and celebrating Kash Daniel acting like an idiot. The poor guy probably thinks he HAS to do his Macho Man Randy Savage act whenever a camera is in range. Gets old. Play football.

He tries a little too hard with his shtick. It’s clearly an act which is unnecessary and puts a target on his back. Not a good idea for an inside linebacker whose a half-step slow in the SEC.

I have to agree. No reason to act like that, especially when you’re going up against a team that was brought in as a tune-up game for Florida. Not that it’s ok to disrespect any opponent, but there’s not even any bad blood there. Gotta be better than that.

“I’m surprised the line moved in that direction, but that’s just how skeptical some people are about the Gators, I guess.”

Could it be, maybe, that they like a QB who throws a better ball than Wilson against a Florida squad without their best cover corner on Bowden?

It is not the QB I have concerns with, and yes, I think we will miss Wilson, the defense has not come close to being dominant….and that was against MAC teams.

SEC speed, size strength and atleticism is coming at us. I hope we will be able to get more out of the Dline and LBs as the season goes forward.

    Go Cats!

A few years ago when South Carolina didn’t shake our guys hands everyone was making a big deal how they felt disrespected and went out and got the win. Why would we now condone that same behavior from our guys doing it?

Oh please, SC. Trash talking is a part of sports. Get over yourself. You wouldn’t be all friendly if someone was up in your face pointing their finger talking crap. I think Kash handled it well, he laughed at him and then responded.

Not to belabor the point but look at his captain meeting last week, before he even left the sidelines he was well into his WWE act….. “I’ll stare down that motherfuc$er !!” ….no one was in his face then.
But hey, if that works for you have at it. Did Josh Allen, Cobb, Dupree, or even Terry Wilson ever act like that ? Not a good look. IMO.

Yeah it works for me. Other players on our team feed off his energy and he brings maximum effort every game, it’s all in good fun. Spectators take things so seriously, players know it’s a part of playing the game. If his team mates have a problem with his behavior, then it’s a problem. If some fans do, so what

After we beat FL, Allen went around to their fans and did the gator chomp… Do you approve of that? Is it okay to talk smack to fans, just not players?
