The voice of Commonwealth Stadium

With the conclusion of Kentucky football’s home opener that saw the Cats put up 41 points, the Commonwealth Stadium public address announcer had a lot of work to do. Carl Nathe is the voice you hear, known for his signature “FIRST DOOOOWN KENTUCKY” call echoing through the stadium at every home game. UK Athletics allows us to go behind the scenes to take a look at what goes into his job, and gives a peek inside the pressbox. It’s pretty cool.

There were a total of 27 first downs and five touchdowns this afternoon against Miami. That’s a lot of excitement for Mr. Nathe. There is a job I think a lot of us would love to have.

  2. SEC means Southeastern Crumbling?

Watching another game today. ESPN said ACC is now 2-1 against SEC top 25. They also talked about UK getting dominated and losing its season opener as an SEC member against a Sunbelt team. Are we seeing the end if SEC dominance?

Carl Nathe is a good man. The SEC will be fine this year and we are 2-2 against the ACC this year. Bama neat Va Tech. SC beat NC. Georgia lost to Clemson and Florida lost to Miami. Alabama, LSU and Texas A&M probably better than anything ACC has to offer.

Agree 4. Mr Nathe was actually a sports anchor at WLEX before he took over the CWS gig, I think back around the Curry era if memory serves.

#3–AMEN. I’m almost as tired of “first down Kentucky” as I was of “string music.”

#3 and #6 All College Teams have their own version of the “First Down Kentucky Cheer”
UofL- (my parents are card fans).. Gain is good for another Cards First Down.
WKU- Gain is good for another HILLTOPPERRRRR First Down.

Haven’t been to any other away games but it’s a standard cheer.

Carl’s a great announcer. He can found occasionally at a tailgate party in the Blue Lot. Of course, its only after a UK game–never before.
