Tennessee held their weekly press conference today and because it was streamed live on YouTube, I tuned in. I was pleasantly surprised by two things: how complimentary the Vols were of Kentucky and the majesty of Darrin Kirkland’s hair. Kirkland, a sophomore linebacker with 25 tackles through four games this season, showed off his magnificent fro, which he says he’s been growing since July. One reporter asked him how he fit all of that hair into his helmet.
“I don’t really know exactly how I get it into the helmet, I kind of just smush it in and it pops back up.”
Like everyone else who’s watched Kentucky play this season, Kirkland said he’s been most impressed by Boom Williams and Benny Snell.
“They have great balance between their running backs, number 18 and 26. They really do a great job of complimenting each other. They’re both downhill runners, but they both, when defenses provide a lot of vertical seams, they take advantage of it very well, so our defense has to be consistent every down that we play against them.”
Wide receiver Josh Malone leads the Vols in receiving, with 31 catches for 556 yards and 7 touchdowns this season and said he can tell on film that Kentucky’s a well-coached squad.
“It shows on the film they’re a well-coached team. Play real hard, I feel like even last year and the years before they were good teams, but they’ve got everything clicking and look good heading into this week.”
Senior defensive lineman LaTroy Lewis agreed.
“I like what I see from this Kentucky team. I think they’re a very good ball team. They like to run the ball, they do it in a lot of different ways. Gritty receiving corps. I’m excited to play a quality opponent.”
Now stop saying nice things and having cool hair so I can go back to hating you, Tennessee.
