Stoops unsure who will be Kentucky’s quarterback moving forward

Quarterback Joey Gatewood made his first career start today against Georgia. The change at quarterback was made after Terry Wilson suffered a minor injury against Missouri. Mark Stoops said Thursday the wrist injury made it difficult for Wilson to comfortably handle a football.

At times Kentucky’s offense looked improved with Gatewood in the driver’s seat. Even so, Kentucky still only put together one scoring drive that produced three points.

The Wildcats will have a bye next Saturday, giving Wilson’s injured wrist plenty of time to heal. Will UK return to Wilson or stick with Gatewood against Vanderbilt?

“I don’t think I need to comment on that right now. I haven’t watched any film at all. We’ll wait and make those decisions,” Stoops said after the game.

Gatewood completed 60 percent of his passes for 91 yards, averaging 3.6 yards per attempt. The longest pass of the day went 11 yards. Despite the ho-hum performance, it was against the best defense UK will face all season, making it difficult to assess what Gatewood brings to Gran’s offense.

If you were making the decision today, who would you put in it at quarterback, Terry Wilson or Joey Gatewood?

What’s your logic for Wilson being the guy?

Gatewood didnt show anything Terry hasnt done. Actually terry has shown a a deep ball Gatewood is what he is a big slow runner that really cannot throw passes accurately more than 5-7 yards this is the reason Auburn went with Nix.

I think you’re wrong about Gatewood’s ability to throw accurately down the field. We’ll see about that.

Save your breath Hender. SoBlu does not say what he means nor does he mean what he says.

Gatewood is a much better passer. We have OnE game to slam him. He throws a better ball too. It was his first career game as a starter. And first full game. I’m not sold or down on him yet. The verdict isn’t out. Wilson however….we all know what he brings. Running…screen pass and fumble

Hmmmm……Hard to judge an offense that is still trying to run last years offense as if Bowden was still playing QB. Innovation would be nice and Gatewood nor Wilson have the athletic skill as Bowden did. Stretch the field if you have a kid that has a strong arm. Teams will keep stacking the box and keep containment! The offense needs a serious make over!

Beau Allen needs to be given a chance. This is a throw away season and Stoops needs to act now. He is going to lose recruits if this shit continues.

One thing Stoops is sure about is keeping Gran as OC.

What I hate about this years team is the lack any excitement. It’s almost like they are going through the motions and that’s on Stoops.

In defense of Gatewood, receivers have to create some space, get open….ain’t happenin.

I just want a natural drop bk and comfortable stepping up and delivering the ball downfield QB. Doesn’t have 2 be a future NFL 1B. But it least a NFL prospect. Someone good enough 2 get signed undrafted fa, end up on a practice squad.. We haven’t had that since Hartline.. You would think in the SEC, our facilities, recent success, we could go out and nab a true and gifted QB with not only arm talent, but pocket presence..

I believe that turning around the UK Football program is NOT for the faint hearted. The leader must be tough, confident and have thick skin. This is profiling a little but generally speaking, that requires a tough-minded coach which usually is defense and running. Strengths carried to extremes can be weaknesses. Under pressure every human being resorts to their comfort zone which are strengths. Going too far that way can be a weakness. It is a tough balance and flows down to Eddie from Stoops. I like Stoops’ mentality. That mentality has helped say “screw the past” (Pardon me, “forget the past”) let’s change the culture. You cannot have that mentality and be too worried about what others think of your style. But, at some point adjustments will have to be made. It’s a tough thing. I am thankful for Stoops and what he has done with recruiting, facilities, toughness, bowl wins etc. He deserves a hat tip. I don’t trust people who don’t seek first to understand. I hope he has some trustworthy advisors who also can help understand how to help the program CONTINUE to take the next proverbial step. Hang in there Coach. Many of us are thankful for what you have done so far. If we can social distance “together” we can figure this out together!

Gatewood is a slower version of TW who is a softer version of Stephen Johnson and Stoops has gone as far as possible in that direction. Stoops or his successor has to make a real commitment to scoring points as opposed to possessing the ball as the primary defense. Start Allen before he transfers.

How about changing coaches instead of quarterbacks. I am not throwing Gran under the bus as it is obvious Stoops will not let Gran do anything but what he does. Stoops thinks his great offense will win and it will not.

I don’t agree with your recommendation but there is wisdom in your understanding that Stoops is driving some of that. Just don’t be like an investor giddy about getting a higher interest rate return under certain stressful situations that result in losing their principal investment. Stoops is responsible for many positives!

In all fairness to Gatewood, the GA pass rush was relentless, and he never had more than a few seconds to either scramble or get off a quick (ie, short) pass. GA was giving us the shorter passes and completely shut down the long heaves down field.

The O-line does a good job run blocking but their pass protection has been suspect all season. Landon Young has especially struggled the last 2 weeks. It’s difficult to throw downfield when you don’t have time.

Yep 1/3 of the problem. Other 2 is scheme and receivers not getting open

Gatewood is no better than TW. I’d say actually a good bit worse at this moment since TW at least has winning experience and all those games under his belt. But TW’s confidence is definitely on the brink with the fanbase seeming to hold him mostly responsible here. I remain steadfast in thinking no matter of personnel or play-calling changes will make a difference with what is seemingly fundamentally inadequate. The entire offensive system needs to be scrapped. The whole read-option, check-with-me, 100% shotgun one-back set is garbage for a team wanting to be a power run team. At this point the best solution would be to play Allen since he is likely going to be the better long-term solution at QB than Gatewood.

TW has already said this is his final season at KY – Gatewood has shown potential – but vs Vandy we need to show we can pass so start Beau Allen (we have 2 experienced backups) and see what he can do for a quarter or even a half – our D can win most games if we score 24 points
