Despite the loss, there’s no denying that the atmosphere at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday night was electric. By all accounts, the stadium was absolutely buzzing with excitement, with many calling it the best atmosphere in Commonwealth Stadium in years. Mark Stoops started his press conference by thanking the fans for giving the team an edge and making it feel like a big-time SEC football game.
“I cannot thank the fans enough. That’s what it takes,” Stoops said of the energy in Commonwealth Stadium. “That’s an SEC football game at home against a quality opponent and that’s great energy.”
It’s not always easy sitting around the hotel all day for a 7:30 p.m. kick, but Stoops said the crowd immediately energized his squad.
“It certainly wasn’t a problem getting motivated with that type of atmosphere and that type of energy and excitement. That’s what we need to play in front of all the time. That’s what the SEC is all about.”
Several high-profile recruits were in the stands on Saturday night, and although he couldn’t discuss specifics, Stoops said they left Commonwealth Stadium very impressed.
“Nothing but positive,” Stoops said of the feedback he’s gotten from the recruits in attendance. “Anybody that was here absolutely loved the environment and loved seeing the fanbase so energized and liked the way our team is playing and like the passion and effort from our team.”
I wasn’t at the game, but you could feel the energy through the TV, especially at the start:
