Stoops still not ready to name a starting quarterback

Mark Stoops and his thirteen of his best SEC coaching friends held a teleconference this morning to talk about how their teams did during spring practice. Stoops said that overall, he was pleased with his team’s progress, and despite minor injuries throughout the spring, they expect everyone to be back by the fall. Predictably, he was asked about the quarterback position, and said that he’s still not ready to name a starter:

“Patrick did some good things in the spring and played well. But I was also pleased with the other two. I am not quite ready to name a starter, but I feel good about the quarterback play.”

Later on, Stoops was asked specifically about Reese Phillips, whom he said was at times the most consistent of the three, and very much still in the hunt:

“Reese is a guy that the coaches and our players have a lot of confidence in and that’s a great compliment. He is guy we feel is always very steady. At times throughout the spring he was the guy most consistent and moved the team the best. He seems to do very good things and have a good command of the offense. Reese is very much in the hunt. I like the way he is playing.”

Let’s just not drag it out into the season, please.

As I have said from the beginning, Patrick will be the starting qb, Reece will be the backup, and Drew will redshirt. This isn’t the same situation that they faced last year when 2 completely different types of qb’s (i.e. 2 different type of offenses) were competing for the same job. One was prone to getting hurt; the other didn’t have the arm needed for a spread offense.

Exactly. Got to redshirt Barker as that would be huge for the future of the program.

Before the Spring game, I couldn’t have disagreed with you more. After, you’re right on with it. I’m proud of Towles and the work he’s put in. I have been a Towles hater since he came here, thinking he may have been the one transferring. Not anymore. He’s much improved. Phillips is not far behind though. Barker is distant 3rd in my opinion. I know QB’s still in high school in this state better than him right now, let alone will demolish his stats when they’re in the same grade.

So you switched from hating Towles to hating Barker? Really?! You know high school qb’s around the state better than Barker right now? Which ones? Where? Maybe you should just take some time off from hating altogether. Bizarre.

Not hating on Barker. He’ll get there hopefully, like Towles has so far. Houliston (Highlands), Hartz (O Cath), Sendilar (Caldwell Co), Hall (Pulaski Co), Hayes (BG), Page (Collins), Ryan (Lex Cath) all have better all around stats. At least 4 of those have played better teams than Barker did. 3 of them actually won state championships. I’d probably put him in the top 4-5 out of all current high school QB’s. I would probably rank the top 5 out of those mentioned as Houliston, Sendilar, Hayes, Hall, Barker.

This is designed to keep all the candidates on their toes and working hard all summer to find out how well they each an lead the team…Nothing more or nothing less…MRob..the redshirting thing is not so much a factor anymore…If a freshman is a pro prospect(Couch.. Cobb, Winston, etc.) they are not staying four or five yrs . so coaches must be very selective deciding who to redshirt because you very well may lose a yr. of him playing for you..

umm, Winston redshirted his first year at FSU. Couch was going to redshirt until Curry screwed that up late his freshman year, and Cobb didn’t have the talent around him to make redshirting an option.

I’m sure that when the time comes, Coach Stoops and staff will name their Quarterback. Of course whom ever Coach decides on will be viewed as the wrong choice by many of the armchair coaches who provide this site with expert football knowledge as if the coaches are out of touch with reality.

It will if they dont choose Towles!!! He was the only one who could make the out route throws!! So Towles is the only QB right now that can run Browns offense!! Im sick of the Reese Phillips hype i know he was 10 for 17 but he had 5 out route passes jumped and all could have been picked off including one that bounced to a receiver and was caught!! Im not hating but right now Towles is only one who can make the throws!! If Towles is not the choice i think some fans will be frustrated !

    • Thanks coach!
      4:01 pm April 30, 2014 Permalink

If it’s true that he’s the only one capable of running Brown’s offense I wonder if someone on staff, like say maybe Brown, is aware of that fact? Or is it possible the coach needs a fan to point out something about out routes to him? Get over yourself.

That is because there isn’t a capable QB on the roster at this point.

Why make a decision. Go 2-10 again, give the coaching staff another $25,000 to $50,000 raise like you did two weeks ago. Towles is to good of a kid to be in this program!!!!!!!!!!

Stay calm!! I agree Towles is the guy but if they start someone else he should leave!!

Why do the irrational fans NEVER know how to use the correct form of to and too?

They are going to start the best option. I don’t know how you could watch the spring game and say that one of them won the spot. Towles looked the sharpest, but he didn’t look to be head and shoulders above the other 2. Keep in mind that drew barker has been here for 3 months. He could improve by leaps and bounds over the summer after getting the spring under his belt. THAT’S why they haven’t named a starter. They will most likely give them a week or two into summer practice before rolling with one of them.

Take that negativity somewhere else, turd.

I agree with Coach Stoops. Let the 3 QB’s work all summer, and into fall camp, and see who stands out the most then.
