As the Cats prepare to play in-state foe Murray State, Stoops took to the podium to say he was pleased with the overall preparations in this week’s practices to prepare for the Racers.
A big emphasis in this week’s preparations for the Cats was playing to their standard. Kentucky has had an unfortunate history of staying in tight games against FCS opponents, a la EKU, so Stoops put an emphasis on playing to the standards they have against every opponent.
“We’ve talked about it all week, playing to our standards, and playing the type of football game where we play to the best of our abilities,” said Stoops.
The most important thing to take away from Stoops’ presser is he expects that the players that play pivotal roles will be playing limited minutes to guard against injury. Under the new redshirt rule, he hopes to get a few fresh faces in the game against the Racers as well. Stoops said, “I would like to use a few guys, just because we have to right now. Just because of a few injuries and some stuff going on at some positions, nothing major, but we hope to get a few guys in there.”
That also means Benny Snell will likely be on a pitch count. Stoops said he doesn’t want to put a number on it, but he felt he was still used a little much in the Florida game. They would like to protect him going forward, and they have confidence in the other running backs to take a bit of a load off of Benny.
Speaking of Benny Snell, UK has caught wind of the national attention he has gotten for the Heisman trophy. When asked if there would be any marketing campaign behind Benny’s Heisman run he said he was unsure at the moment and that subject is out of his hands.
Hopefully, whoever is in charge can kick off the campaign soon…I’ll be the first in line for a #BennyforHeisman T-shirt.
Stoops also said that Terry has looked good as usual, had high praise for Josh Allen and the cornerbacks, and he hopes to use Miles Butler to figure out what he’s got and get some experience in for him.
