Stoops on Bossman Fat: “He let the game come to him”

After a rough start to his Kentucky career, Kelvin Joseph has bounced back and earned that Bossman Fat nickname. The former LSU Tiger has interceptions in back-to-back games, most recently a 41-yard pick-six in the second quarter vs. Tennessee to put Kentucky up 7-0. This afternoon, Mark Stoops said Joseph’s early missteps were a result of the sophomore trying too hard instead of letting the game come to him.

“I think Kelvin, we all knew what type of talent he has. I think he was really pressing hard early. You’ve got to remember, this is a young man that had to sit out all of last year so you need to get some game reps. It’s one thing to have practice reps underneath you and there’s another thing to have game reps under you and I think he really wanted to play well, again, for himself, for his team and sometimes when you press too much and you try to do things beyond what you’re coached to do, bad things happen. That happens all the time and again, it’s not for selfish reasons.”

“I think Kelvin let the game come to him,” Stoops added. “At that position, you’re only going to have so many opportunities per game and you have to make the most of it and he’s done that the past couple of weeks. He’s let the game come to him and done his job of focusing on what he needs to do and good things are going to happen to him.”

In addition to that interception for a touchdown, Joseph had four tackles, two solo, and a pass breakup vs. the Vols. According to Pro Football Focus, he was the second highest-graded Power Five defender of the week, right behind teammate Jamin Davis. Both players made PFF’s Team of the Week, along with Drake Jackson and Austin Dotson.

Not too shabby. Let’s relive that Pick Six one more time:
