Stoops “not sure” which quarterback will start vs. Georgia

Kentucky’s offense failed to get off the ground today despite appearances by both Terry Wilson and Joey Gatewood. The Cats put up only 47 yards through the air, the majority of that a 26-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to Josh Ali in the fourth quarter; yet, it was Gatewood who finished the game. Who will start vs. Georgia next Saturday?

“Not sure,” Mark Stoops told reporters after the game, adding that Gatewood was in at the end “just to get reps.”

Well then. Wilson finished the game 3-9 for 35 yards and the aforementioned touchdown. Gatewood, who came in near the start of the second quarter and was replaced by Wilson with 5:25 left in the third, completed 1-4 passes for 12 yards and ran for six more yards on three carries.

The switches at quarterback will draw headlines, but I think we all want to know why Kentucky went away from the running game — specifically Chris Rodriguez. Of all of the issues on offense today, that seems like the biggest.

Gotta be gatewood. He looked good back there

Gonna go out on a big limb here, Wilson will start for sure. And everyone knows it. He could throw 3 ints in consecutive passes, yet Wilson will still remain QB1.

Gatewood is the future! Terry is holding the program bc he is limited, now it’s time for our coaches to realize it and move Gatewood to QB1

I know most say roll with Gatewood, but almost think they need to go with Allen. He is a true passing QB. Gatewood is a slower, but more physical TW. Either way this season is doomed. The defense is below par. They have zero playmakers on offense, and the offensive coordinator is an idiot.

In order to pass effectively you need receivers.

And HOW do you develop your Receivers when your Quarterback and OC run the football 5x as much as passing it???

      You DONT..

It doesn’t matter if you had Tom Brady in his prime with Eddie Gran dialing up that ness he does. We have 2 pass plays, one receiver route down the left sideline and our great bubble screen.

AJ is a good back and he was a good back when Benny was here. That did not stop staff from feeding Benny first. AJ’s style requires the best fit. C-Rod’s style may fit better for this offense as Benny did. It is a reasonable question to consider why he was not fed the ball following the TD pass. That part of the offensive uncertainty is not a Terry vs Joey issue.

So disappointing…the SEC is so down across the board this year. Maybe 4 top 25 teams max in the whole league….and yet, UK looks to be quickly sliding back to doormat status. Sad.

I’m pretty sure the TE was not targeted once. Looks more and more like Marrow is basically just a bag man and coach in name only.

If I am Bo Alan or Joey Gatewood… I must be thinking:

“do you really think I am not a better Quarterback than this guy ( Terry Wilson ) ?

Which has to be frustrating for both young men.

Especially watching Eddie Gran running an offense that is all one dimensional RUNNING?

Must be leading to “F*** You Stoops” feelings, and who could blame them?

The issue is… even if you play Gatewwod or Alan… Eddie Grann will not know how to properly coach / use either player!

We are doomed with Grann and Stoops!

    GONE BIG BLUE!

A true freshman CB for LSU just had an awesome pick 6. He also wears number one. No wonder big fat transferred. LSU told him he was too slow and wanted to move him to safety.

First comment this year, not that mad, been a weird year. The first requirement for a quarterback is the ability to make accurate throws to different parts of the field, second is to be able to read defenses and to use the pocket. Wilson possess none of that and never was a SEC QB, he wasn’t good in jr college, he’s good for a couple good throws a game that’s not enough. Running backs run the football quarterbacks throw it. The other guy, don’t know about, his running reminds me of Morgan Newton, stiff and upright, see above under running backs, don’t know about his arm. Hopefully we have a new offensive coordinator next year.

I probably wouldn’t be either. But I would definitely know which one wouldn’t starting. Start Gatewood and of you have to try Allen. He’s been talked up that he knows the office and can read defenses, so give him a shot. I know he can throw it. I have no clue what’s happened to Wilson. Have never saw anyone regress so far that fast.

Here’s a thought… maybe Gran is only drawing up plays he knows his current QB can run. He was a passing OC at Cincy and I’d be interested in seeing what he could do with an actual passing QB. Just a thought

      He has one. Sawyer Smith.

    • whatwasthat
      9:28 pm October 24, 2020 Permalink

Never a word about Sawyer, must have destroyed his shoulder against, I think it was Florida. A good passing game opens it up for, you guessed it, the running backs. Cats have some good passing QB’s, seems they all wind up with terrible shoulder injuries. Tired of the rpo.

      9:37 pm October 24, 2020 Permalink

Sawyer smith was awful last year. I agree our receivers are a part of the problem, but when you start a QB who can’t read a defense you are just going to be mediocre in the SEC. not Eddie grans gran’s stoops hand cuffs him with Terry. I love the kid and he’s a great person, but it’s not fair for the rest of the team. He’s not the same since the injury.

I know you probably won’t see this, but I disagree facerocker. He threw the ball very well before he got hurt. I do wonder, as “what” said above, if he’s still too banged up to play. I remember him coming in for a QB sneak or 2 late last year, but that’s it.

Wilson does NOT want to get hit! He falls before, runs out of bounds, slides early, or gets to the sideline like he did late in the 3rd and just cringed prior to getting hit. At least Gatewood won’t chickensh*t out if he’s running.

  21. east-ky-boy

Gatewood. We know Wilson is inconsistent. Don’t give me the 10-3 year. He was a game manager for Benny, Len and the stout defense. Wilson is an athlete. That’s for sure. But gatewood is clearly our passer. One ball shoulda been caught. One was a pass interference and the other was a fumble. None his fault.

The ultimate problem is stoops handcuffs his OC. I honestly believe he don’t want a balanced attack. He wants a ground and pound offense and a solid defense. Great when it works. But you have to be willing to change

Our linemen have every right to be monumentally pissed off. Glad they are outstanding gentleman and wouldn’t say a cross word . They are the only successful unit outside of the punter . Workin so hard down there on both sides of the ball & watchig everyone else be steadily underwhelming

It isn’t all the QB. The receivers were blockers last year, maybe that’s all they’re good for. Ali appears to be the best but maybe that’s bc Terry looks at him the entire play… and he puts it on the ground to kill drives and finish games. Even if we had a good passer like Beau Allen, could this line pass protect? I haven’t seen it. Maybe it’s bc they know what’s coming and Terry can’t take a hit or make a quick read but we have a lot of TFL for a team w a great line. I know Smoke being out hurts, but we have a room full of RB w talent… why do we keep going back to AJ? So, yea, our QB1 remains one of the bottom 2-4 in the league, but there’s more problems than that. Gatewood or Allen have higher ceilings, for sure. But can the line protect, the backs block, the receivers run routes and catch balls to make a difference if we do upgrade? Can the OC call a decent game? It’s worth a try, bc the defense can’t carry us each week… but it may not be enough. Two weeks in a row, the D carried us. It’s a lot to ask. Esp w UGa, ‘Bama and UF up In the next month. Better make that call sooner rather than later.

It was a horrible game. I think it is wrong to panic like this. COVID has made this a different season. We don’t even have to have a winning season to get a bowl game. There were no tune up games to get the players confidence up and find itself. Let’s regroup. I don’t think Gran is a bad OC. He has done great things with Bowden and others. They need to make a decision in the QB and go with it. Wishy washy never works.
