Mark Stoops just met with the media, and said that he’s not ready to name a backup quarterback, joking with reporters to “give me at least a day.” Stoops said he feels like all three quarterbacks did really well and the battle for the starting spot was “very close.” Ultimately, Stoops said Patrick Towles “won the job” and praised all of the hard work he put in during his redshirt season.

What does this mean for Drew Barker? Stoops said that he’s not ready to talk about redshirting Drew yet, and he wants him to keep competing in practice for now. “I want Drew to keep on working and keep on battling.”

Stoops is up with Tim and Jared on KSR right now…

I sure hope he is able to redshirt him. Drew us a true freshman and not ready for the SEC. No reason to throw away a season of eligibility

How is this a difficult decision? Drew Barker will benefit way more from sitting a year and keeping year of eligibilty instead of coming off the bench at some point during the season. Reese Phillips is a more than capable back up from everything we are hearing. What am I missing that makes this a decision that cannot be made now?

Do not redshirt Barker!! He will see the field this year! Towles will not survive the entire year! It’s not a matter of IF he gets hurt, it’s just a matter of WHEN he gets hurt during this season! It’s the SEC…. It’s gonna happen!

      Then Reese will play.

    • Yeah but....

What about Reese Phillips? If were expected to have 3 capable QBs every year because of injuries then were screwed before we even kickoff.

Exactly, it’s all about WHEN he gets hurt. That determines if/when Drew red shirts or not.

No! Why waste a year. If this was a top team of course, but why waste a year. Were still a year away, stupid to waste him for a year.Id rather have him when we getting 7,8,9 wins a year.

Given UK’s past tract record for injured qbs., I can understand why many of you think Towles will be injured early on in the season. But considering the inept offensive ability of the past coaching staffs maybe this will be a different season. Hopefully defenses will not be able to key off on the qb as was the case in the past, knowing before hand what the next play would be.

If the offensive line play improves along with the running game and with coach Brown’s quick strike passing game, hopefully defenses will not find it so easy to kill our qbs. With this team being so young, injuries will come. Lets hope they will not be overly serious.

Barker still has a shot at being the starter and taking us to a bowl. Towles just gets us 4 wins no more. Be realistic, he came from the best program in the state and the bus was going way to fast for him to beat out a kid that would make a better wide receiver under two coaching staffs. Drew will be starting soon, he’s a natural leader and capable of standing on his own.

If you are recruiting a player the caliber of drew barker and then not play him you had better be ready to redshirt him. Nothing else makes any sense. Why would you waste a year of eligibility?

They don’t have to make a decision on redshirts until a couple weeks into the season. As long as they don’t play him, there is no rush. They will ultimately end up redshirting him, and I think this is what is needed. It will benefit both Barker and the program. He will grow a ton mentally and physically, and the team around him will improve and be better in the future. Redshirting will give him the best chance to succeed going forward.

Tim Couch said it on the radio- it is nearly impossible for a true freshman to make an impact in the SEC. Give the guy another year of eligibility at the end of his college career when he is more physically and mentally mature, and our team around him is better.

please redshirt Barker and give Tyler Ulis a little growth hormone.
this will benefit their professional careers.

UK has averages 3 or 4 starting QBs every year. We ran out of QBs one year and played a WR at QB. You’re foolish to think that Towles will go through the entire season without getting banged up. Barker will play. So will Reese and probably Max Smith too.

Just reading through some of these comments. I don’t know why ppl are just assuming we will have a losing record this year. I’m not going to rule out a winning season, and you only have to look in the trenches to see why. Just look at our D-Line. Who is going to do anything against us with the ball with Z, Bud, and Elam? I’m just saying defense will put us into position to win games, and I think this defense is going to be exceptional because the guys up front will make everyone look good on that side of the ball. From there the offense only has to do a marginal job to win games.

They need to redshirt Barker if at all possible. This is not going to be a winning season…we are going to be too young this year. We have more talent on this team than ever at UK but that does not mean that almost every team in the SEC will not have more. Let the young guys mature…including Barker, so we can compete in the future.

Stoops is building this program…don’t get in a hurry and waste a year of Barker’s eligibility. And, who cares when Stoops announces it, as long as he does eventually.

Well, bummer, I wanted Drew to win the QB job. But it looks like Patrick. So be it. Hey, I do have hopes that we can maybe, please, I hope, pray, have a winning season. Perhaps a pipe dream and maybe more likely next year; but I always like to put a positive outlook on things, albeit perhaps through rose colored glasses. And Patrick is a Kentucky guy; but Drew did so much for this program, I had hoped that he would win the job. It is what it is and, of course, I shall root from Patrick all the way. I guess it was a tough decision for Coach Stoops to make. Regardless, GO CATS!
