It’s time to get to know the UT-Martin…(googles “UT-Martin Football) Sky Hawks! So far, we know their quarterback is Brett Favre’s nephew even if he looks old enough to be his brother, and he used to play against Za’Darius Smith back in the day. Earlier today, Mark Stoops told us a little bit abut UT-Martin’s real star, senior linebacker Tony Bell, who was named a preseason football All-American by
Pheele Phil Steele:
“They have a great defensive player, No. 40, the linebacker, an exceptional player. He’s a really good football player,” Stoops said of Bell. “He can play anywhere in the country. Really like the way he plays.”
In fact, Stoops said that Bell reminds him of one of his own players, Bud Dupree, which is some seriously high praise:
“He’s a great linebacker, but he’s a great pass‑rusher as well. Like Bud in that area. Bud is an outside backer, obviously much bigger. But he’s like Bud in that he’s comfortable on his feet, got great instincts, he’s an extremely good pass‑rusher. He’s a mismatch for some people on the edge.”
Bell led the OVC in sacks (10.5) and tackles for loss (15) last season and was named National Defensive Player of the Week twice. While Saturday’s game will likely be a blowout, the Cats can’t afford to look past #40, who will give them a great challenge right out of the gate.
