Stoops is Proud of His Team’s Determination in Hard Fought Win

After Kentucky gutted through a 24-17 victory over Southern Miss, Mark Stoops was proud of his team’s ability to hold on, even though they didn’t play their best.

“Very, very proud of this football team to come away with a win like that.  It does so much for ya.  All the points of emphasis that we worked so hard in the offseason were evident in certain areas,” Stoops said. “I really was just proud.  The improvement defensively was very evident.  We would have never won that game had we not improved our run defense and we certainly did that.”

Last year Kentucky surrendered 262 rushing yards to Southern Miss.  Tonight the Golden Eagles gained just 55 yards on the ground.  The defense got the job done when the offense could not.

“That shows a lot of character, a lot of guts, a lot of determination from that football team to come out and win that game when you’re not playing your best football, certainly on the offensive side of the football.”

Even though it wasn’t pretty for many, it was beautiful to Mark Stoops

“That’s what I love about it.  It was just a hard fought, tough victory.  It was a thing of beauty to me.  I know people are going to have a their own opinions, but I loved it.”

Wow, somebody is mad that we got revenge on a team on the road, when we didn’t play our best. I don’t understand the negativity

Same people who praised him after beating Louisville and getting us to a bowl

The defense played unbelievably well. I guess Stoops doesn’t have anything to do with that?! Lol. At least we didn’t almost lose to Purdue.

Two of the offense’s most productive receivers are gone. 4 freshmen seeing time at that position. One hasn’t gotten many first team snaps because they got here LATE. It’s not coaching. It’s timing.

Johnson needs to not try to be so precise with his throws (aiming and/or a flat trajectory) and instead throw through the route (loft and lead) so the receivers can adjust and run through the ball. The young receivers need to not slow down on their routes.

Benny needs to run the wildcat like he did last year, and not rush to the hole as he has to as a back. The two positions are very different. Not having Mosier to run behind was a big difference in this game.

Defense is much better. This is both timing and coaching to go with recruiting.

We have to remember how well Dawson knows our personnel and scheme, and adjust our expectations accordingly. Based on last year’s game at home, USM should have been a 2 TD victor at their place. This win was a 3 TD turn around for the Cats. If they can win the ugly games, there’s more hope for the games when they have their stuff together.

Regardless of what anyone thinks of our coach, let’s hope recruits are smart enough to not read an obscure website like this to make their decision about where to play college ball.

Our Dline and LBs though. We will finally be able to harass QBs. Teams like Scar dont worry me nesrly as much since we seem to be better defending the run and have athletic edge rushers. Now our 2ndary needs to get their ish together. They were in the right spots every time except the blown Safety coverage overtop of Griffin I believe. 2ndary seemed to be in beat position most of the time so that is good just gotta make a play on the ball. Offense will get clicking just gotta be patient as RBs and let the Oline develop holes. Benny and King were rushing and not being patient.

Bowden needs a reality check if he is going to be on twitter like that. I dont care how good you are you dont act like that. Stoops should set him straight and set a precedent that this is a team concept and you will get your time when the time is right. If you are impatient or bring that kind of attitude in the locker, then bye!

Stoops needs to address that twitter comment bc if not and then he plays him right away he may lose respect of the locker room. This will be a huge decision as a Leader that Stoops has to do.

Yep, plus Baity and Edwards. Paschal is going to be a beast too. Most talented defense we’ve had in a decade. Maybe ever.

Last night, the win felt like a loss. Expectations were high, and revenge factor was off the charts. Glad the players play and not us fans. 1-0 with a road win over a bowl team, I will take it.

OL seemed to struggle and was not in sync, which seemed to affect the rest of the O. Gran admitted he was probably too stubborn with the wildcat.

I hope that a close win on the road will give them insight into what needs to be corrected more than a blowout win over an outmatched opponent.

Good win on the road. Have a lot to work on this week with a very beatable opponent for home opener. I expect us to look much better next week. By the way, looks like found us a punter mate!

We gotta see what they look like in a couple weeks. You see the most improvement between weeks 1 and 2, so let’s watch.
