After leading the team in rushing as a freshman in 2014, Boom Williams shares the starting running back responsibilities with JoJo Kemp in the post-spring depth chart and many project him to be the breakout star in the SEC this upcoming season.
Today, Mark Stoops raved about his sophomore back, saying Williams is the game-breaker Kentucky needs.
“Boom is a guy that has exceptional talent,” Stoops told the media in Hoover earlier today. “He has that game-breaking capability that you’re looking for. Very excited about him.”
However, like with all of Stoops’ players, there is still room to improve. Williams needs grow in certain areas, which is expected from anyone heading into their second season, and nothing will be handed to him.
“He won’t be given anything, just like any of our players will,” said Stoops. “As you know, you need quite a few running backs for this league. He knows that. But he is a key piece to us and our success, and I’m pleased with his growth in certain areas, and he needs to continue to grow in certain areas as well.”
Williams rushed for 486 yards and five touchdowns on 74 carriers in 2014. I’ll take the over on those numbers in his sophomore campaign.
