Steve Spurrier’s Best Quotes from 23 SEC Media Days

Tomorrow the unofficial start to football season begins with the SEC Media Days in Hoover, Alabama.  Mrs. Tyler will be representing the KSR contingency when Mark Stoops takes the podium before Nick Saban on Wednesday.

We all love Coach Stoops, but the most entertaining show of the spectacle will be on Tuesday when Steve Spurrier takes the podium for a record 23rd time.  He’s easy to hate, but after two wins over the Ol’ Ball Coach in the last five years we can safely sit back and enjoy his ridiculousness.  Enjoy it while you can.  The way things are going at South Carolina, you never know how much longer he’ll be there.

Here’s the best of the best since he took over at Florida:

“I thought I was going to coach in the NFL for 5 or 6 years, retire to the beach and play some golf. That was a bad idea.”

“We’ve got a pretty good team, I think. Most of the magazines have us at 9, 10, 11, something like that.”

“Kevin Sumlin is a good coach. … He’s a good negotiator, too, we know that. He’s got a good deal.”

“Remember when coaches used to retire? They don’t retire. They get fired. One goal is to not get fired. I’m going to make it.”

“I do feel badly for Arkansas. That’s no fun getting your butt beat at home, homecoming and all that.”

On Clemson: “They don’t play well when they play us.”

“Will be the 14th time I’ve coached in Neyland Stadium. … I’ve coached there more than some of their head coaches.”

“Our offensive line (is) pretty good at everything except blocking. Unfortunately, that’s all we ask them to do.”

“To me, it doesn’t make any sense to get your own players hurt in practice,” he said. “When the Army guys practice against each other, they don’t use live bullets. Why do football teams use live hits?”

On his age: “The Pope is 77 years old and he’s in charge of a billion people. All I have to do is put 11 on the field.”

“I don’t know. I sort of always liked playing them that second game because you could always count on them having two or three key players suspended.”

“You know what FSU stands for, don’t you? Free Shoes University.”

“You can’t spell Citrus (Bowl) without U-T.”

“I know why Peyton (Manning) came back for his senior year. He wanted to be a three-time star of the Citrus Bowl.”

My unfavorite Spurrier quote was when he said, when asked what he thought of UK, “I think they have a really good punter”. I’m going to be in the stands in Columbia on Sep 12, and I’m going to be leading the 4th quarter cheer “YOU HAVE A GREAT PUNTER, STEVE”.
