Steve Clinkscale reportedly accepts coaching position at Michigan

One of Mark Stoops’ most important assistant coaches is leaving Lexington.

Steve Clinkscale has reportedly agreed to join Jim Harbuagh’s staff at the University of Michigan. According to Sam Webb of 247 Sports, Clinkscale will be the defensive passing game coordinator defensive backs coach for the Wolverines. The three-year deal offers Clinkscale an opportunity to be promoted to co-defensive coordinator in years two and three.

Clinkscale has been an exceptional recruiter since he joined Stoops’ staff in 2016 as defensive backs coach. Recently promoted to defensive passing game coordinator, Clinkscale opened a recruiting pipeline in the state of Michigan, bringing the state’s top prospects to UK in 2018, Marquan McCall, and 2020, Justin Rogers. Rogers is the highest-ranked UK signee in the internet era.

Three of Clinkscale’s recruits — LB DeAndre Square, S Yusuf Corker and OT Jeremy Flax — are expected to be starters when UK’s season opens against UL-Monroe Sept. 4. Clinkscale also secured commitments from three four-star recruits in UK’s top 10 2022 recruiting class, ATH Jeremiah Caldwell and the Wade twins.

In addition to being one of the top recruiters on Stoops’ staff, Clinkscale helped UK’s pass defense rank first in consecutive seasons. This fall the Wildcats must replace two starters at cornerback. Finding someone to replace Coach Clink’s production will be a difficult task for Mark Stoops.

Can we hire him back after next season when Harbaugh gets fired?

Big mistake, Harbaugh is on his way out and I don’t see Clink replacing him.

You equate losing a top recruiting class to jumping off a bridge? I’ve heard hyperbole in my time, but that is a bit much.

Pensacola, I don’t think you know what hyperbole means, because your first comment is a perfect example of the word, not the guy sarcastically replying to you. Hyperbole is over reacting to something, and saying we lose our recruiting class because one coach within minutes of said coach leaving is absolutely hyperbole. And….bluehender is right, so many of you “fans” are so quick to reach doom and gloom conclusions and it’s both frustrating and hilarious to read the way y’all react.

and the UK – Big Ten battles cross from hoops to the grid iron. Good luck and much thanks to Coach Clink and we can’t settle, got to try to find an upgrade. (not an ez task)

Thank Coach Clink, for all your help and contributions. I have a feeling that we’re going to feel this one pretty bad. Hopefully we can find a good replacement, but this is a tough loss for sure.

They will be fine. Good luck to him. He signed a three year contract and will get a huge raise. There’s no way with this one that UK could match as sounded like they were offering about $200000 more. When increase his have to increase other positional coaches, so looking at increasing assistant coaches salaries combined by over 1 million – not going to happen. Have trust in Stoops that he’ll find the right person.

Huge raise and bigger title. Once Harbough is fired he can stay on the DC level. Smart move on his behalf.

We could have matched or exceeded any offer they made, last time I checked UK Football pays for every other sport except BBall at the UK, and the fact UK bball pays for itself and more is rare, I believe there are only about 10 schools that are positive cash flow in BBall. If it was about money it shouldn’t have been, but I doubt it was, say what anybody wants and I love UK football and what is happening, but Michigan is still on a different level than UK, so until we start hitting the big bowls year in and year out everybody can just cool their heels on that.

Maybe he just wanted to go back to Michigan.

Well, that one hurts. But I’m sure Stoops, as a former DC, has a handle on replacing him. I would worry more if it was a key offensive coach and recruiter we were losing.

    • Cat4life23

Because our offense is amazing lol

  19. ClutchCargo

I knew I would get called on that one. That was a hypothetical example from some alternate universe where our offense is amazing and we just lost a key piece.

Shocking that Stoops and Barnhart didn’t do everything to keep him here (more $$$, additional title, etc…)… Blown away that Michigan still has that kind of
pull in SEC country and against an emerging SEC power…
