I don’t know how up you are on your Louisiana-Monroe news, but apparently, the Warhawks fired head coach Todd Berry on Saturday following a 59-21 loss to Arkansas State. The search is on for a new head coach and today, The News Star’s Adam Hunsucker listed Shannon Dawson as a potential candidate.
Dawson is a Louisiana native and coached at Southeastern Louisiana at the beginning of his career, so the move wouldn’t be totally off base; however, as even Hunscuker notes, it’s not like Dawson has a lot to brag about after this season, pointing out that UK’s currently 109th in the FBS in scoring. Ouch, baby. Also problematic: money. Berry made $200,000 less than Dawson currently makes at Kentucky.
The potential long-term job security of Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops could be a factor here, but so could money. It’s very doubtful ULM could approach the kind of pay day Dawson is already receiving at Kentucky. The best strategy ULM could take here is to sell the opportunity to be a head coach and the chance to get out of a situation that could go south at in Lexington. Of course it’s also fair to point out the ‘Cat’s offensive struggles under Dawson are part of the reason for their struggles.
Right now, could Dawson “taking the leap” to his first head coaching job be a win-win for both parties?
