Shannon Dawson confirms report he’s out

UK has yet to confirm WKYT’s report that Shannon Dawson is out as offensive coordinator, but that’s not stopping Dawson himself from talking. According to Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman, Dawson has confirmed that he’s out at Kentucky, saying that philosophically, things weren’t working out.

I agree. Philosophically, running an inside draw on second down against Auburn with under a minute remaining when you need to score doesn’t make sense. But oh well. Like Dawson always said, If it would have worked, it would have been great.

Dawson’s offensive philosophy – “make stuff up as you go, hope it works out, then get defensive when it doesn’t.”

Yeah, I could see why that didn’t work out.

People need to relax on the “three OCs in three years” complaint. Dawson was a bad hire and that’s totally on Stoops, but Neil Brown left to be a head coach. Different circumstances that I won’t hold against Stoops.

True story! I’d rather get someone in who knows what they’re doing this offseason instead of next. Dawson was in over his head, Holgerson did him no favors calling all of the plays at WVU instead of teaching Dawson what to do.

Sean Lewis from Bowling Green? Top offense in total yards and passing.

I still like the run call versus Auburn. The defense is expecting pass and only rushing 3 lineman. A draw works great in that situation and the amount of time remaining is negligible. If the run goes for a first down (likely given it was 2nd and 5, IIRC and draw plays gain an average of 5.2 yards) the clock stops. If the play does not go for a first down, it’s unlikely that players would have gotten too far downfield and another play could be run quickly.

Dawson did make many mistakes, but the run call versus Auburn was certainly not one of them.

And running with draw plays is textbook Air Raid. When Mumme wasn’t throwing it, he was running draws.

For the record, a draw is best used against an over-aggressive or a blitzing defense. It “draws” the pass rushing defense out of position to stop the run to create open spaces where defensive linemen and linebackers should have been to create the potential for big yards… thus the name “draw.” Just saying.

I just hope Stoops didn’t make this move without having options already lined up. UK has a recruiting class to hold together, and we don’t need weeks of not knowing who the new OC will be.

Let’s hope Stoops brings in someone who believes tight ends exist.

So is Eliot next? I think this was a mutual split and it seems very indicative of the confusion within the team. Not sure this is a good sign for Stoops. He could be the problem with not knowing what kind of offensive identity to build.
