Shannon and Stoops Chime in on the Cats’ First Practice in Full Pads

Stoops has gotten a little sun as practice begins to heat up (I’m not sorry for the poor pun).

They’re getting close to making a decision at quarterback.

Stoops said, “It could be any day,” but the likely scenario is after a Saturday morning scrimmage.  Shannon Dawson was actually shy for the first time in his life, hesitant to give many details on the situation.

Big George is Makin’ Moves

Drew already told you about the injuries on everybody’s radar, but there’s another one that could be opening the door on the offensive line.  Coach Stoops said that Kyle Meadow’s migraine was more severe than we originally thought, forcing him to enter the hospital over the weekend.  Meadows is out of the hospital, with his status pending.

Meanwhile, Big George Asafo-Adjei has been taking all of the first team reps at right tackle.  Sometimes the freshman gets thrown off guard by a blitz he’s never seen before, but it’s helping him become a better player, “When that happens, sometimes it reminds you that he’s still young and he needs all of those reps,” Coach Schlarman said.  “One great thing about him, the second time he sees something he’s right on it.  That’s the sign of a smart football player.”

Schlarman’s praise didn’t end there.  He admitted the Big George will have a shot to start upon Meadow’s return, “There’s gonna be competition, there’s no question about it.”

“I’m proud of those guys.”

–  Shannon Dawson on Ryan Timmons and Juice Johnson.

Timmons has been extremely consistent after an up and down sophomore season that was plagued with injuries.  If you were wanting to hear good news about Ryan Timmons, this is the best news you could possibly hear.  Juice is still doing Juice things, but what’s impressed the coaches the most is how he has embraced the film room in the offseason.  Becoming a student of the game has helped Juice, who’s the most interchangeable wide receiver, playing inside and out, on either side of the ball.

Speaking of receivers, I spoke on Saturday about how Tommy Mainord has a good problem with a plethora of wide receivers.  I was not sure how he’d find a solution, but I learned the first step today.  Mainord is in the experimental phase with his group.  Since they’re more experienced now and don’t need their hand held through the basics, he’s moving around a lot of guys to a lot of different positions to figure out what is the best combination.  I’m a big fan and eager to see the results.

Potential Punt Returners

Ryan Timmons, T.V. Williams and Sihiem King make up your short list in the return game.  Even though he’s a true freshman, Stoops said he wouldn’t hesitate to keep the redshirt off any freshman that would, “make a significant contribution.”  Stoops is making a bold statement about who will play, “Anybody that will help us win games.”

You’ve seen Stoops for the last few days, so I thought I’d let you see Shannon Dawson dodge quarterback questions.

CBS just reaffirmed that UK football is once again the rectum of the SEC. A bigger, stronger, faster rectum

I love Shannon Dawson. It’s easy to listen to him and see that his mentor has been Hal Mumme. He loves to play games with the media. He realizes that fans know he is a top Offensive Coordinator right now. He is also smart enough to know that will change when his QB throws his first INT. Mistakes are going to be made but you can’t be afraid to compete. Play the next play! Where did we hear that before? Draw a play in the dirt; make one up on a napkin. That’s a relaxed atmosphere. Let the players make plays.

The offense will explode this season under Dawson but LSU offense will be in a funk by seaon’s end. LSU will fire their offensive coordinator and offer Dawson the position. Will he go back to Louisiana or stay loyal to the blue
