Eight Leftovers from Saturday’s Loss

UK Athletics

UK Athletics

1. The Offense Broke Records

Not to beat a dead horse, but additional perspective is necessary.  UK’s 443 rushing yards were the second-most ever recorded in a game, only three shy of the record set in 1951.  It’s the most rushing yards ever against an SEC opponent.  The previous record was 409 vs. Vanderbilt in 1953.  Bear Bryant was the head coach for both of those record-setting performances.

635 yards of total offense is the seventh-most ever recorded by a Kentucky football team.

2. Austin MacGinnis’ Onside Kick was Outstanding

3. Boom and Benny are the Best

Boom Williams and Benny Snell combined for 206 rushing yards.  They’ve combined for 1,879 yards this season, tying the record set by Sonny Collins and Mike Fanuzzi in 1974.  Both backs have four games with over 100 rushing yards, the first time that’s ever been accomplished in school history.

4. Wild First Down Stats

The Vols averaged 10.8 yards per play on first down.  That’s not good, but Kentucky did average 11.5 yards per carry on first down thanks to some big plays from Stephen Johnson and Jojo Kemp.

5. Sihiem King Scored

We thought the game was over, but Sihiem King wasn’t finished.  Receiving his first significant snaps of the season, he rushed for a career-high 75 yards and this 24-yard touchdown, the second of his career.

6. Dobbs is Done

In four meetings against UK he scored 16 touchdowns.  Last I checked, four touchdowns a game is a lot of touchdowns.

7. Adjusting Without Jordan Jones

The SEC’s third best tackler left the game early and the defense suffered.  Eli Brown was in the rotation, but struggled taking every snap, finishing with four tackles.  Brown said Jones was there to help on the sidelines, but it wasn’t easy to replace Jones.

“It was a different feeling [with Jordan being out] because I haven’t played a whole game. Usually I rotate in with Jordan. Going through practice there is a lot of reps, but the plays we called in the game I barely had any reps on. Courtney Love was next to me, in the game, helping me out, making sure I got into the right spot. Me and Jordan always help each other out and every time I came to the sideline he would coach me up, and I love him for that.”

8. Austin Peay isn’t Looking Good

The team that stands between UK and a bowl just lost to EKU 67-30.  I like the Cats’ chances.
