Angry Stoops watch continues for the second straight day after a poor scrimmage earlier today. Mark Stoops briefly met with the media and talked about his disappointment in his team’s efforts in their last preseason scrimmage.
“I didn’t feel like we had a great sense of urgency on either side of the ball,” Stoop said. “Very little communication. Very little energy. Not a good scrimmage. Took a step back.”
Stoops believed his team would respond after a bad practice on Friday, but a lack of effort was clear on both sides of the ball. Stoops was especially disappointed in the lack of leadership from veteran players to overcome bad practice and correct things.
When asked about how the quarterbacks played, Stoops answered, “okay, just okay.” Stoops added that he is not worried about one position, but all positions. Despite multiple injuries, Stoops said that’s no excuse for poor play. “It’s gotta be the next man up and we didn’t really have that mentality today with guys stepping up and guys competing,” Stoops said.
The team is not completely done for the day. Stoops said that the coaches will be watching tape then going over it with players. If it weren’t for something going on at the stadium tonight, Stoops said he would have brought the team back there tonight.
When asked if anything went well today, Stoops answered with “kickers kicked good.” Coach Coach Spurrier will be talking about that again this year, about how good our punter does ’cause we ain’t gonna get a lot of first downs if we play like that,” Stoop said.
This was supposed to be the team’s last scrimmage of the preseason, but because of poor effort Stoops stated they might have to add one more before kick-off in two weeks.
Injury update: Boom Williams was able to get some reps in at today’s scrimmage after spraining his knee back on Aug. 10.
Just remember, two weeks from today college football will have returned! We will be tailgating and getting ready to attend the first game at the newly renovated Commonwealth Stadium in only 14 short days!
