While doing some curls and drinking from a pot of coffee with a straw earlier this morning, I turned on the SEC Network to see what was all the National Signing Day rage around the conference. The moment I tuned in I saw Gene Chizik speaking highly of Kentucky’s recruiting class. He named UK his “School Most Likely To Exceed Ranking,” while bragging on the way Mark Stoops and his staff do it.
“You know what I love about them? The way they evaluate and develop,” said the former Auburn coach. “To me, now you’re looking at a class that’s probably the best class they’ve signed since 2014. We’ve seen what they’ve done with the Josh Allens of the world, so now you’re looking at better recruiting classes, which — now you’ve got a better type of athlete to work with that they can develop, evaluate and bring along. I think you’re going to see a bunch of stars come out of this class.”
Chizik’s colleague, recruiting analyst Craig Haubert, then named UK signee Kalil Branham his “Player Most Likely To Exceed Ranking.”
Haubert said, “For me it’s a Kentucky player, a wide receiver, Kalil Branham… At one point he was a Michigan commit; ultimately though, he is an early enrollee for the Wildcats. He’s got tremendous size, he’s explosive off the line, he can be that vertical-type threat, tremendous ball skills; he can grow as a route runner, but you can teach that. I really like the big play ability that he has. He’s a three-star wide receiver, but watch out for him as he gets into that program and develops.”
On a signing day with very little news and spectacle around the Bluegrass, we celebrate little things like this. Maybe I can track down a video of it soon.
Also I wasn’t doing curls.
