The SEC football fansite, Saturday Down South, recently projected the top five passing offenses for 2015.  Guess who made the list?  That’s right, under new offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson, SDS projects that Kentucky will have the 5th best passing offense in the SEC.

The projections were based on an estimated number of passing yards that each team will have this season.  This takes into consideration the team’s philosophy, returning players, and the talent level of not one, but all QBs on the team.  Here’s what they had to say about our Kentucky Wildcats:

5. Kentucky Wildcats

Preferred combo: QB Patrick Towles to WR Ryan Timmons
Underrated weapon: RB Jojo Kemp
Projected production: 2,997 yards, 28 TDs

Why it’s deadly: Tough call here with several teams in contention for the No. 5 spot, but we expect Kentucky’s Air Raid under first-year play caller Shannon Dawson to exceed expectations and flourish under a slightly revised philosophy. Dawson worked closely with Towles, Drew Baker and his group of receivers during spring to teach concepts and timing in his quick-strike scheme. Sophomore wideout Garrett Johnson is the wild-card. He caught six passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns against Florida, but only managed 16 receptions for 117 yards in 10 other games, combined. Boom Williams provides the thunder in the backfield, but Jojo Kemp’s the guy, if properly utilized, who could be a gamebreaker from a receiving standpoint in the screen game.

While it’s only a projection, you have to admit, this kind of stuff gets you excited for some football in the bluegrass.  Continuing down the list, we have Alabama, Auburn, Miss. St., and Texas A&M.  To read the remaining projections, simply follow this link.

It’s nice to see Kentucky finally getting some recognition around the SEC community.

Go Big Blue!

The Cats’ are as deep at receiver as I can ever remember. Timmons, Johnson, Baker, Bone among others make for a quality cast of pass catchers, for Dawson’s ” Air Raid” attack. The addition of possession receivers Jab Greenwood, Tavin Richardson and Therrell Goiser will boaster this core of very talented receivers. In my humble opinion, the only thing keeping UK from leading the SEC in passing is the need and concern by Stoops to have a straight balanced attack. This should be a banner year for the Kentucky offense.
