Here’s some interesting breaking news: according to Southern Miss beat writer Jason Munz, Kentucky’s season opener against the Golden Eagles will move to Thursday, September 1 for television reasons. If true, that means Kentucky will be on ESPN for a Thursday night game for the second season in a row, the first being last year’s game vs. Auburn on October 15.

Playing one of the first football games of the season in front of a nation starving for college football? Yes, please.

UPDATE: Not so fast…

If most fans do what they say they were going to do after the Louisville game fiasco last year and are going to wait until Stoops and the team show them something before they get onboard with the new season a Thursday night game could be quite embarrassing attendance wise. I don’t expect much of a turnout regardless of the day though. That UL game really pissed a lot of people off and I really can’t blame fans for not buying season tickets and take a wait and see attitude. And no one is expecting the game to be easy for UK. If they lose that first game and show a lot of the same problems from last year the fans could bail before the season is even a game old. I think the first 4-5 games will be the biggest of Stoops’ short head coaching career, he doesn’t have to win every one of those games but the team has got to show fight and enthusiasm as well as fixing the problems from last year like dropped passes, receivers who were not giving their all every play/game. The thing is though what does UK and Barnhart do if Stoops does not produce a winning season/bowl game this year AND next. Who is going to want this job? What else can UK do to try and make football succeed? They were criticized a lot by Brooks and others who said if they wanted a winner they needed to make a commitment to football. Multi million dollar stadium upgrade, new practice facility, paying assistant coaches more, what else can be done? This year is not make or break but next year will be if again there is no bowl game and/or a second half of season meltdown again. As many others know it’s SO frustrating being a UK football fan!

Coach Stoops needs to beat South Carolina, Mizzura, and Vandy to bring fans back. Otherwise he is a lame duck and will be gone after 2017 season.
