Cue the Ryan laugh, because we’ve got some breaking news. According to, Kentucky’s inside linebackers coach Matt House will be promoted to defensive coordinator. House will take over for DJ Eliot, who left the program for Colorado a few weeks back.

House’s promotion is expected. After joining the staff in May 2016, House has done an excellent job as UK’s inside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator. Prior to coaching at UK, he was a defensive coordinator at Florida International and Pitt, so he has experience at the position. This move also means Mark Stoops will likely remain involved with the defense after taking over for DJ Eliot midseason.

We’re awaiting confirmation from UK, but in the meantime, congrats, Coach House.

A pink squirrel would have been an upgrade.

So does that make this an in-House promotion? 😀

From the picture, it looks like he tells it like it is.

I don’t dislike Coach House, but I thought this was an opportunity for us to make an SEC-type move and hire a DC that would do for the defense what Gran-Hinshaw did for the offensive–give us an identity and pride.

My hopes were very up for Bo Pellini, a Youngstown and Cardinal Mooney guy with ties to Stoops. At the very least, hiring an up-and-comer with an aggressive Top 20 in sacks and total defense like Arkansas State’s DC Joe Cauthen or Appalachian State’s Nate Woody (he stymied Tennessee at Neyland).

It’s tough to be excited at keeping intact the nation’s 85th ranked defense (last in the SEC East/12th in the SEC in yards per play and TDs allowed) and 97th in the nation in sacks (last in the SEC East/13th in the SEC). Now we have everything the same minus Eliot (which I’m not upset about). Bringing in another coach, even if not a DC, could only help the defense.

Look at the SEC defenses that worse than UK — there were only three in 2016 — and they made a big splash in improving their defenses. Arkansas hired Paul Rhoads, a former Power 5 head coach and fantastic defensive mind. Mississippi State hired Todd Grantham, who has had Top 15 defenses going back a decade or more with UGA and Louisville. I don’t get it.

Pelini was *never* coming to UK to be a DC, but Cauthen or Woody would have been interesting choices. If he had been available, another good choice would have been Houston’s DC Todd Orlando but he went to Texas with Herman (AAC team with an ACC-level defense)

Pellini was just slightly less likely than Belichick.

Most D-Coordinators would want the reigns, but Stoops is not about to do that again right now. House allows for continuity and a willingness to accept the title without full control of the D.
